Interesting. Since the posts were probably there to prevent over flattening of the O rings and or excessive distortion of the mating surface, I'm wondering if perhaps it was designed to take a thicker O ring. The recess does look like it could accommodate a thicker one except maybe the little retainer tabs could be an issue.
