I had done the same. I punched a hole and progressively made it larger. I think 2" was the final size.

I also had my goat belly replaced with pipes. A willing welder did it for $100, and still made it removeable.

The result is still not overly loud. At that point air can flow straight through the mufflers, but there is still LOTS of turbulance to distort the sound before it exits the muffler body.
