Exclamation Mark 2008 vulcan nomad Fuel Pump Info needed

Hi all,

I have a 2008 vuulcan nomad with just under 70 k on clock. I have had the bike since new. Bike is now out of warranty but at about 30 K the fuel pump had to be replaced because it was screaming. I now have the same problem 30 K later. It appears that this is because kawasaki did away with fuel filter when they changed the tank shape for this model. Problem is the price for a fuel pump in Australia is $900.00. Can any one tell me what the pumps manufacturers name and what part number it is? I reckon the pump will be a standard item made by bosch or similar which i will be able to get for under $200. Kawasaki Australia hasn't been helpful at all. I have tried ceaning pump and it is obvious when you look at the way these pumps have been installed by kawasaki that their failure is inevitable. The screen on the base of these pumps is inadequate and the pick up is located at the lowest point of the tank so fuel pump has to suck 'gunk' and will fail in time. Other solution would be to devise a way to incorporate a fuel filter on inlet side like they had in the previous model. Love to hear from others with similar experiences and solutions, Thanks Mark.

I can't recall what some others have bought. I know there are less expensive fuel pumps available. Check some of the online parts places such as cheapcycleparts.com and see what you can find.

Welcome to the forum from Alabama, USA.

I sure the pump is a Mitsubishi, there was a cross reference here at one time where a car pump was used, possibly with a small modification.

For $900, I'd let the thing squeal. It works, doesn't it? Mine squealed for probably 25,000 miles.

Although I don't know of anyone who has used one, I've read that a Mitsubishi fuel pump # E-8023 is the same as the one in the Nomad, only it doesn't have some filter or screen. Trosco would be the expert on this subject.

You still have a fuel pump in the gas tank.

Yeah, go ahead and take a chance on it quiting on the road 1000 miles from home and try to find one then.

I think Cliff has it right but I would send a pm to Trosco and MacMac, both members here and get their advice.
I found a used pump on Ebay. Mine started screaming at 35,000 miles and I have an 07.
If I read your post correctly you are saying Kawasaki changed the fuel pump in 2008.

I know. I was just saying that I didn't know anything about his particular problem as my bike is different.

If they changed the pump in '08 (to something better, I assume), I wonder if that would retrofit into a pre-'08?

I think my point was that a noisy fuel pump doesn't necessarily mean it is failing. I would wait until the pump failed before plunking down $900 (or even $400 in the USA) for one. That's a ridiculous cost for a freaking fuel pump.

Default Fuel pump
If the fuel pump on your 1600 Nomad fails and you don't have warranty coverage, a new pump runs $400-$500 from a dealer. They are sealed units and have no serviceable components.

However, there is an alternative. The fuel pump used in the 1600 Nomad is made by Mitsubishi, and it is the same pump used in the 1989 Mitsubishi Galant. I just checked Autozone, and the pump runs less than $135. You can also purchase the pickup screen and filter to go with it.

Autozone PN # E8023

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par.../N-ihhkaZ8vcz2

Warning: As of now, this is all hypothetical information. I have not personally validated this information because I have not replaced my fuel pump. If someone attempts this replacement, please post your results, positive or negative.
NOTE; Another fuel pump to try is PN # E8455 which better matches the Vulcan part. Perhaps Kawasaki used more than one pump on the bikes, in different model years. Make sure you take your old pump with you when your comparing, so you get the correct pump.

His is a 2008 by his post. The pump and everything else is exactly the same as your 2007 I believe.
