H-D Syn 3 20W-50 Oil
A friend of mine purchased several cases of H-D synthetic oil and offered me some for my 04 Nomad. I thought it was very unusual that the bottles contain no API certs or ratings. Is this oil OK for use in my Nomad?

I'm not a mechanic, but Harley's use a separate oil tank like a car so it may have the energy conserving additives that you don't want mixed in with your clutch. Just my $.02 but I wouldn't do it.

I also just read a story on that HD Syn 3 oil and it's good stuff and it's safe for wet clutch. The touring models of Harley have integrated oil containment (no seperate Tank). The same Syn 3 20W50 is used in ALL locations; Engine Oil, Transmission, and Primary...including the wet clutch. I've used it in the past. I've seen other Motorcycle Mfg brand oil without an API designation too.

Thanx Nico! With a wear scar of .7mm (.027") HD Syn 3 isn't as good as most other synthetic motocycle oils. But with only a .002" bigger wear scar difference it's not far from the majority of motorcycle oils compared to Amsoil or Motul.
I prefer Amsoil, but I'd still use Syn 3 over dino oil.

Hey Gobb
I just downloaded a white paper from Amsoil and they rate the HD Syn3, 6th out of 16 oils, which I guess ain't to bad. Be happy to send it to you.
