Seat Mods

Having my Nomad for only a couple weeks has given me limited knowledge on its operation, but I do know the seat has to be tweaked. I will be riding up to Mean City to get the foam carved a little bit in the not too distant future as I need to be sitting IN the seat and not on it. I also have an Airhawk which I used on my VN750 for longer trips, but if I tweak the Nad seat I wonder if I should sell the hawk and get a nice sheepskin or beaded cover instead. If anyone uses either one or the other I'd like to know and see some pics. Can't decide on shaggy or short. Love to hear from ya!

I've used the beads on my 06 stock seat.
It's an imprivement.
I got the Airhawk 2 last month.
Big improvement if I sit 'on' the seat just right.
I do think a reshaping of the seat would help but.
If it's still not right then we've spent money and trashed the seat.
Mustang seat with a back rest is almost $600.
My friend with a Honda likes his and if seem good to me. Standing still.
How it feels after 4 hours of riding I don't know.
Either way it's a lot of money to invest without being sure of the outcome.
Add to that my shape is different than his shap different than your shape.
What works for me might not work for you.

I don't know the answer.

Mike

I dont know anybody that bought a Daylong and does not like it, me included.
No harm in carving the stock seat to see what suits you. If you dont like the results send the seat pan to Daylong.

There is a guy selling a Daylong front seat for a pre 05 Nomad on the Delphi Vulcan forum.

Mean City is not as big an investment as a new seat. They will work with you to get it tweaked (if I understand it right) until it is just right. I did my own seat (as have a couple other guys on this board), so I haven't worked with them directly. I have been very happy with my seat after I modded it. I would think if you have them do your seat, you should not need the Airhawk any longer.

I redid a seat by using an electric carving knife to reshape the foam.I believe I removed about 1.5 inches .I then added a layer of high density carpet pad.The hardest part is stretching the cover and smoothing out the wrinkles. It also take a heavy duty stapling gun.It worked very well.I have never used the beads but I do like the sheep skin.Cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. To me,the shaggy looks funny but to each their own.I'm sorry I don't have any pictures because that was three bikes ago.I finally went with a Mustang seat on every bike since then.I always buy them used from Ebay or on a forum. The Mustang two piece seat with the back rest I now have on my Nomad was found on Ebay for $400 shipped and looked new. There are Mustang deals out there if you look.Gook luck on what ever you do and don't be afraid to slice and dice your stock seat.If you mess it up you can take it to a shop and have a little foam added and they can slap the cover back on for you.Shouldn't cost much.

Mean City modified both of my seats. They were both better but not good enough. They wanted me to send them back for tweaking but I didn't want to invest more than the $200+ I already had in them. Shipping on seats isn't very cheap.

What do you have now Mitch ???

michaelh , I have bought seats on ebay to modify. I used an electric carving knife. It isn't that hard. Just keep moding till you get something you like.
I have my stock seat untouched just in case I want to go back to that.
Right now I have a seat from a 750 Honda Aero modified by me. I like to putz around as the wife is fond of saying ;)

I have the Alaska Butt Pad sheepskins on both passenger and drivers seats. Short hair and I like them. Keeps the seat cool in the sun and my butt does not sweat. Enter "Deadsheep" in the promo code for a discount. Get the size larger than recommended for the Nomad.

thanks fellas. Russel Daylong is WAY out of my budget. between 40 and 100 clams for a seat mod and I'll be good. alaska leather recommends the medium. My gut told me that would be too small. thanks for the tip. If I get one of those it will be large... maybe even brown!

Does the Alaska leather change your ride position by lifting you up? I'm just curious.

I paid a local upholsterer 125.00 to redo my seat with memory foqam. He cut it to resemble the seats from the Classics, and used memoryfoam, then recovered it. Not a mustang, but one helluva an improvement. I use a Bakup backrest with it. Whatever you decide, get you a backrest. Grasshopper makes a good one for the money that works well with stock seats. Wasn't around when I got my Bakup.

I have Corbin and love it! Some say they are hard.. Support is more important that fluff! I also cut down my stock seat for a solo ride. Problem with the stock pan, is just that... it's the stock pan and there is not a whole lot you can do with them. (exempt.DayLong). I think most aftermarket seat manuf. have there own molds and are not limited to the basic structure of the stock pan. ebay.. baby.

I sent mine to Mean City Cycles and had the memory foam mod done. They charge $100, well worth it.
