Bought a used 16GB iPod with a flash drive instead of hard drive. Has worked flawlessly for about 200 miles. My HD iPod wouldn't go 10 miles without at least a skip or song advance in the middle of a song

So,....there are iPods with a flash drive? {internal ?} When you say flash drive I'm thinking thumb drive. The small data storages that can plug into your PC or laptop. Yes? No?
I asked my friend Brian if he solved his issue where his iPod either froze up, skipped, or did a number of things. He said no. And his son has the same issue. Given what seems to be a great compartment to put your iPod in on the Voyager and Vaquero's I'm wondering if it's something that Kawasaki needs to address. Has anyone got it figured out yet or "fixed"?

Most iPods except the classic model use flash or nonvolatile memory. It's all electrons stored in a chip and vibration doesn't affect it. With hard drives, vibration will be an issue. It may or may not help to encase the iPod in some sort of foam, if it is bouncing around in a compartment, and enough to not allow it to move around. Another method is to put the iPod on your person.

I hear you ponch, but the case for the ipod on both the Voyager and Vaquero are made for ipods. My friend says his fits real tight and couldn't possibly move/bounce around. This doesn't make sense to me. If I had a place specificly for an ipod ,...it should work. I'm thinking the cable might be screwed.

If it fits tight, and you think the cable is screwed, replacing the cable shouldn't be a big deal. On the other hand, if someone has an iPod Touch, Nano or iPhone, you should be able to test the cable with that and the problem should be repeatable if the cable is indeed bad. Does Kawasaki specify which models of iPod and IOS versions are compatible with their setup?

Yea, what ponch said. I have several hundred miles now and the flash memory iPod I bought has not had any issue at all. The harddrive version iPod classic I was trying to use would not work more than maybe 20 minutes at best.

Yes, the iPod cable from Kaw does have a foam piece that holds the iPod, and fills the left glovebox. It made no difference, the harddrive version will lock up

Here is the installation manual for the iPod cable: http://www.kawasaki.com/Site/kawasak..._K10400040.pdf. iPhones do not work with it.

I wonder if another possibility is that the iPod classic gets too hot. My guess it is vibration, but if it is too tight, that foam wedge could be trimmed slightly. Another test is to just let the iPod play with the bike sitting in the garage. Does it still cut out after 20 minutes?

From the Accessories page at the Kawasaki website:

Note: Audio devices with Hard Drive storage are not recommended due to possible effects from road vibration.

Used a Ipod Touch 4th gen for quite a while. Worked great. No issues. It mysteriously disappeared during divorce. Tried my Ipod classic, locked up after about 30 minutes of riding. Going to buy another Touch soon.

Hey does anyone know at what size the iPod goes with a Hard Drive? I'd like to get the largest capacity without getting one with a HD.

thanks Ponch!! I'm guessing the iPod Touch is the only model without a HD.
I'm going to checkout the classic.

Think you are looking at backwards... the classic have hard drives and WILL skip if used on bikes.

The Nano's are all non HD models I believe. I have an older model Nano 16GB and it has performed flawlessly

The classic has a HD. Not exactly what you may want on a bike...But I think it would work fine if it is on your person. On the Vaquero/Voyager, NG.
