Newer beemers have ESA or Electronic Suspension Adjustment. I can set the preload to one up, one up with luggage and two up. I also have three dampening settings that I can change on the fly as well. I have ESA I. The new bikes have more settings and I think they can change the preload on the fly too, but I am not sure. My bike was the last year for ESA I.

In the world of shocks, Ohlins are suppose to be the cats ass. They will build to suit.

I think we used Fox shocks back then, but you could assemble them from a variety of parts, and we used nitrogen to gas them up.
On the twin track sleds, each shock had different spring rates and settings on it. Since the only turned left on the track, you could really fine tune them for the corners.

Here's how my day has gone so far. Measure, measure, measure, drill, shit the hole's off, plug in the Dremel, open up the hole, measure, Dremel, cuss. Move on to the next hole to be drilled. Measure, measure, measure, drill, shit the hole's off, Dremel, etc, etc. And still don't have the bloody thing mounted on the bike. Oh, and I need some shorter bolts.

Are you center punching the holes first and using a smaller diameter drill first. Ideally you should center punch then use a center drill or starter drill to get the hole just right.
What Steve says about shortening bolts, just spin a nut on before cutting, then when you take the nut off it will clean up the thread.

That's what I'll do with the bolts. I'm NOT making yet another trip to town to the hardware store. Just not gonna happen. Unfortunately, I noticed something else after I drilled the holes for the bolts. Originally, HD had 2 holes in the middle of the fairing to bolt the bracket to. I thought I'd be smart and use 4 bolts for strength. Once I looked at it, I realized that the bolts might be in the way of the headlights (it has 2). I'll cut off the bolts and see if the headlights still fit.
I've worked on this thing most of the night and all day (until about an hour ago). As usual, I've worked hard and accomplished next to nothing. It's a sloppy job at best. I've given myself an ultimatum. If I don't get the fairing successfully mounted tonight (no trim, no wiring, no details, no paint...just mounted as to be rideable), I'm moving on to a batwing. I can do a batwing in a long weekend as it's almost completely bolt on (I already have gauges, stereo, speakers, lightbar, etc). I can sell both TG fairings for what I'd spend on an inner/outer fairing, windshield, headlight bucket and brackets. I'm already looking on eBay and called the local HD dealership. (Unfortunately, the dealer just threw a bunch of "old" parts out last month. Stuff they figured they weren't selling.) I've learned my limits and this fairing project isn't worth the stress (which I don't deal with well anyway). It'll be riding season soon and I'd rather spend what little time I have getting a project done instead of screwing around with fabricating stuff.

We'll see how things go tonight. Either it's mounted or it's over. I'm not looking for pity, but I've reached my limit.

OK, your frustrated Chris. Don't give yourself a deadline, instead sit down relax have a beer or what ever. When things don't go right for me, I put it aside, go on to something else and attack it the next day with fresh eyes and enthusiasm.

Like they said step back and take a breath watch the nascar race or something and then dive back in

That's why I'm going to bed and trying again tonight. The big hurdle right now is mounting it. I've done such a sloppy job of other parts that it'll take a lot of work to cover stuff up but it will still be ridable even if it looks crappy (and it does). I'm trying to take it one step at a time but there's a ton of stuff left to do before it's even close to being ridable. Meh. We'll see.
