Different oils can make a difference on consumption, but not neccessarily the viscosity. Try a different brand but stick with the recomended 10W40 and see if it makes a difference.

my 99 uses a little oil.. on a recent trip of 2300 kilometers i used around 300ml of oil..

My '99 uses some oil when at interstate speeds for long periods of time.
