Nomad seats

As most of us know the seat on the Nomads are not the best.
I have tried redoing the seat twice, gel pads & beads and still after 2 hrs riding I get a bad case of monkey butt.
Any ideas maybe a Mustang seat, has anyone tried those?

Thank you
Bulldog

I've never owned a Mustang seat though many here do have them and like them. I was fortunate in picking up a Russell Day Long slightly used for a good price. Both the rider and pillion seats are very comfortable. No more monkey butt on 500 - 600 mile days.

I have a Mustang, and while it is an improvement over stock , it isnt the ultimate answer (at least for me). The Russell is in my eventual future.

I have a Mustang 2-piece w/driver backrest. Like LW mentioned, it isn't perfect, but I have done several 400-500+ mile days on it.

Seats are very subjective things. Some guys prefer the stock seat, if you can believe that. I think I had my Mustang seat ordered within the first week of bringing my Nomad home.

Seats are very subjective and are talked about here all the time. You will find a zillion options....the best one being the one that works for you. I have a Mustang and for me is works great. At first it seemed like maybe not so much, but the more miles I put on it, the more broken in it became. After about 1500 miles it fit like a glove. Now I can ride all day long and I really like it... !

First of all I have a very bad back, have had one hip replaced and need to have the other one done. I had a Mustang seat with driver back rest but it just wasn't hard enough for me so we put it on Liz' Nomad and she got me a used Corbin seat. It also has the drivers back rest and is better for me but even with it I am having trouble riding for much over 4 to 5 hours, 300 to 350 miles, a day. Both Liz and I have added Sheep Skins to our seats and that has really helped a lot. Before my back and hips got so bad I tried a gel pad and beads but neither worked for me. I was riding 600 miles a day with the Corbin seat and sheep skin combo without much trouble but I think those days are long gone.

Run your butt over fine sandpaper, sit in a straightback wooden chair for 12 hours straight and you'll think that stock seat is the best!

What grit do you suggest for this? 400 or 800?

That depends on how hairy your butt is. ;)

I'll skip on the sand paper.

Maybe it's just my <30 year old behind, but I don't have a problem with the stock seat. I'm 6'1", set up solo, and rarely even use the highway pegs before 100 miles.
BTW, my dad is 56 (6'3") with a replaced hip, and he rides on his stock seat longer than I do between stops. ??? ???

Nomad seats

I have had a Mustang seat with backrest for a very short time....Mustang Part number 79350 ..it is more comfy than the stock set for ME, and I am going to reserve final judgment for later one, probably spring...I have a sheepskin too, which I use sometime....I have a thick gel pad that seems not to make much difference for me...

If it isn't as comfy as I'd like it to be a month or so after warm weather returns in teh springtime, then I will take the stock seat to Meancitycycles near me and have them modify it and see how that works....they do it for peanuts....several options, some under $100...Fairly consistent favorable customer comments.

BTW, in my opinion, KAWA finally got someone to design a very comfy seat for their 1700 series nomad...it sat great, at least in the showroom..

Sorry to say my bladder runs out of room long before my butt has chance to turn monkey. I like the stock seat on the Nomad with a Grasshopper backrest. On my 900 LT, I have a Mustang and THAT was an improvement. Went from 30 minutes with a sore butt, to all day with no pain...of course there are those pee stops every hour still.

I had a mustang seat w/backrest for awhile and it was very uncomfortable for me. I'm 6' 230. after 150 miles I was in pain and it would not stop. I ended up buying an Diamond custom seat and that has been fantastic for me.

Seats are one of those things which is not a one size fit's all accessory. The best you can do is find guys with your same build and see what a majority likes. Then hope for the best.

My dollars are stretched very thin and my bum knee was yelling louder than my butt so I bought some highway pegs.
Turns out they helped my my butt and back by being able to ride in different positions during the long hauls.

Scott makes a good point. Changing positions is very important! I am also looking for the right seat, I am still with the oem seat and don't want to spend the money they are asking for aftermarket seats!! Riding a distance with the oem seat isn't without question ,just stop often. So there you go I have my answer ,stop often. HA isn't it the trip thats importand !!
