If you are adding an amp to the stock radio, you should still have full handlebar control.

if your using your stock radio the amp will come with instructions, but here's a crash course.

1. remove headlight bezel, headlight assy and fairing.

2. find a location to mount the amp, a lot of guys mount it on top of the radio using a piece of aluminum angle iron. drill 2 holes and mount it to the radio cage. you all also have to drill 2 holes to mount the amp to the bracket, I always use a plastic or rubber spacer between the amp and aluminum.

3. take the speaker wires off the stock speakers, these are now you "high level" inputs/signal for the amp.

4. run new speaker wire from the output channel of the amps to your 6.5's you can solder these or install new crimp connectors(some speakers come with a run of wire that have them)

5. you'll need a power wire ran from the battery with a inline fuse, the amp install instructions will tell you what size fuse to use.

6. you'll need to ground the amp I used the metal fairing support, MAKE SURE you grind the area down to bare metal about the size of a quarter.

.
Here is one of a few links to walk you thru the install . but ONLY FOR the stock stereo with amp.

If you change out the stereo and add an amp you will need a PAC unit that is compatible with the stereo. So you can make the handle bar controls work. That install Video gave me a headache.

installing the pac is time consuming but well worth it, the sound quality is amazing compared to the stock crap.

what kind of speakers? what I typically try to do is match the speakers RMS with the amps RMS power, ex" Rockford 6.5 RMS is75 the fosgate 300x4 75 watt per channel. JL audio makes a very nice 4 channel amp that is rated at 50 watts per channel but that's true power not over rated some brands. I would say in general you can go wrong with a name brand amp Rockford fosgate, jl audio, kicker etc.

here's what my bike:

sounds like with kicker 5.25's powered by a px100.2 in the fairing, and audiopipe tweeters and kicker 6.5's in the bags powered by a jl mhx280/4

jl audio mhx280/4 is another very solid 4 channel amp, bot units will require a 8guage power and ground, use good wire Oxygen Free Copper is what I would suggest it will allow the current to travel cleaner and easier which will give a clean voltage rate at the amp.
