Torque specs

Anybody know off-hand the torque specs for the header flange bolts on a 1600 Nomad? I may be missing it but can't find it in the service manual. Also, has anyone had any bad experience with the HD header gaskets PN #17048-98? I know they will have them in stock where my dealer won't have the OEM gaskets in stock. Thanks.

I use the HD gaskets and they work perfect. I don't torque them though, I tighten them up by hand, and have never had a problem. Anti seize the studs when you have it apart so future removal is easier. You don't want to deal with a broken stud in the cylinder head.

Thanks Steve. I called the local HD dealer and the parts manager told me they have tons of the #17048-98 gaskets. I called my dealer and left a message on the parts voice mail asking if they had the gaskets in stock. I called over 2 hours ago and they haven't returned my call yet. It's either order the gaskets from CCP or Bike Bandit or use the HD gaskets. Dennis Kirk doesn't stock them.

Id just go and use the HD gaskets, they are only about $8.00 or so, and youll have them today. I just got back from my local dealer to pick up a couple parts and they're not open today, Its a long weekend here for us and a lot of places have shut down until Monday.

I just looked too, and can't find it either. I do have a list of torque values on things I do pretty often, and I have 17 FT Lbs written down for the torque value on the head pipe to head flange nuts. Clean the threads a little, and use a little never seize on the threads. And those HD gaskets are the ones I've been using with no problems

I'll swing by the HD dealer and pick them up. $7.95 each. I have some high temperature never sieze that I'll use on the studs. Thanks again Steve and Cliff.

It just shows to "tighten them evenly" I'm guessing their size would be a max of 18lbft. Mitch.

I had one dealer tell me that Vance and Hines recommends the HD gaskets for the Baggers.

13 lbs seems low to me. I could be wrong, but I usually tighten mine snug and then retighten them after a few hundred miles.

+1 on the harley gaskets. They work great!!!!

I'ld low ball it to 8 ft lbs. basicly to snugg back and forth evenly and to crush the gaskets. Not real tight and anti size the threads. I go more than that and wire brush the threads by hand, them mark off the threads the nut will cover and paint whats exposed with hi temp flat black. The paint lasts about long enough before something else happens and the pipes need down again. So far i have only used Ma Kawii gaskets there.

I took the number to a HD dealer and they looked at me like I was nuts. Not a real bad call, but then I just wanted that gaskets set.

After the gaskets are sealed and i know it I ride a couple hundred miles and re-snug COLD.
