Rusted Heat Shield Strapping
Hello,
I recently purchased a 1999 Kawasaki Nomad for my first bike. How can I replace the metal straps on the heat shield as the exhaust leaves the motor? I haven't taken it off yet to make sure but I believe where the straps connect to the heat shield itself are rusted off. The shield is rattling against the exhaust and it getting burnt, ? Any advice or help to this newbie would be greatly appreciated. I can post pictures if neccessary. Thanks Login or Register to Remove Ads |

If memory serves me; ::)
they are like radiator hose clamps. Just take them off and use radiator hose clamps.

Hey Recumbentbob...
I believe the "loop" on the heat shield that the hose clamp goes through is rusted off... I appreciate your help. |

Recumbentbob is correct, radiator hose clamp. If the "loop" is rusted off, not sure what you are going to have to do. Going to have to be creative. If you don't want to replace the heat shields, maybe make a loop out of metal, then drill two small holes through your heat shield now and rivet it. Just make sure you use metal rivets if you do so.

Thanks Bull...
Is it supposed to have a space between the shield and exhaust pipe? So the shield isn't sitting directly on the pipe? I'm just guessing based on looking at the stock exhaust I was given (not on bike) when I purchased it. Where can I purchase just heat shields? Depends on what you are talking about, pictures are best. To me, in my opinion, all the shiny you see is a heat shield to me, as the real exhaust pipe is underneath that. Then, there are a couple of "heat shields" on top of the shiny pipe that are riveted to the shiny shield.
The shiny shield is held onto the real exhaust pipe by radiator clamps. It lays on the exhaust on the 'loops', so yes, you could say there is a space between the shiny and the exhaust. So, are you asking about the shiny shield, or the shiny heat shield, if that makes sense?

99 parts might be a little harder to come by. But upto 04 should be the same.
The brakets are spot welded to the covers before the covers get chromed, so any fixing must be creative and you can forget about epoxie right now. If say you do all the brackets a pattern might be created where the look isn't totally awefull, and good used or new is the next option. The last would be welding, and then getting the whole chromed again, or maybe powder coated black. Bike Bandit might have something too. E-Bay often has used parts in fair shape... And or some times whole almost new systems come up for sale when aftermarket systems are installed.

That happened on my V&H heat Sheilds. I silver soldered them carefully. It did blemish the chrome finish a little but not too badly overall.

Ring that must have been a trick. Did you use any method to heat sink heat off the chrome?
Once i soldered a T shape tab to a musket barrel, then installed the barrel in a wooden stock to drill the tab for a pin. When I pulled the barrel to check the work I found I missed and drilled a horse shoe opening instead of a hole for a pin. Not good. So with wet rags and 2 pair of vise grips I heat sinked the tab, and brazed a bridge on the tab. Re drilling that worked. But it was dicey with solft 50/50 solder. Letting that tab free ment more inletting thin wood.

I think I used a wet rag if I remember right.
