Fuel pump failure, stranded

My 2001 Nomad with 45k, left me high and dry as the fuel pump quit. Rding on a busy city street and the bike died. The speedo cycling sweep does not happen when the key is turned on. Cobra exhaust but no engine mods. No warning signs, fuses are good and plenty of gas. Turned the key on and off a few times but fuel injection would not cycle.
Anyone else experienced this failure or simlar problems? I know I can fix it but maybe a different reason. (hoping

Fuel pump failure, stranded

One of our South Central members was riding along outside of Eureka Springs. I was just behind her in the group when her pump died. Had to pick up her 2008 with my trailer to get it back to the Rider's Rest. Mine has been whining for over a year but is still pumping with 33,000 miles. It will probably leave me stranded one day and the dealers don't stock these pumps.

If it is your fuel pump PM nightmare he knows of a different pump you can get at a lot less than the oem.

Fuel pump failure, stranded

Mine was whining and I didn't want to get stranded so I got one off Ebay from a salvage yard.

Fuel pump failure, stranded

please detail , did the bike quit running ? or did it no start after being stopped? i had a similiar thing happen to me . first check that there is porwer going to the pump. 2nd chech that the pump will it run by it self, to do this use jumps from the battery right to the pump watch the polarity and do this briefly as not to over pressureize the system. if the pump runs the pumps ok if not its the pump. mine truned out to be a bad cdi box. i found this by removing the box from its location but leiving it connected. i held it by the edges and put my thumb in the center of the bumpy side and pushed as if to bow it, carfull you do not want to go nuts here a break anything. after doing this mine woud run the pump at key on and would start and run fine until the next key off stop. i replace the cdi box problem solved. not cheap 600-700 bucks new, i went used from a salvage bike yard about 200 plus shipping. i been told there was a break or loose connection on the board, don"t know you can"t open the cdi box. good luck truckguy02

I went to the dealer with mine but Kaw won't replace it under warranty until it fails. Yep, that's right. I asked the dealer, "So you're telling me that I have to get stranded before the pump will be replaced"? His response was "Yes....sorry".

If it's an FI bike it could be the ecm.

When they go bad one symptom is the fuel pump not cycling as the bike is powered up.

My new card came in today. Automatic renewal every year with roadside assistance for $39/yr. Who can afford not to have it?

Is the speedo sweeping and the gauge lights coming on (self-test) when you turn the ignition? Did you check the 30a fuse under the seat?

Nightmare use to beat on the tank to get his fuel pump to start ticking again. I think he finally replaced it with a generic pump at a fraction of the cost of OEM.

Fuel pump dying is a scary thought. Be sure and let us know when you figure out if it is the pump or not.

We have the p/n listed on our tech board for a Mitsubishi fuel pump. Its a lot cheaper than the Kawi part.

Ring, do you think it will work on a '99? I may have to get one to haul around just in case.

The part in the Kawi is a Mitsubishi made part. Mine ('07 1600) died with no warning last summer after a 300 mile day (300 miles from home) in 98° weather at roughly about 40K miles. I found one on eBay off a low miles Nomad wreck for $95 and the install is pretty simple if you are comfortable removing your gas tank.
