Concealed handgun training

I finished up the training course today and will get all of the paperwork notarized Monday after getting fingerprinted. I'll feel more comfortable riding while packing especially on longer trips. I would reccommend this to anyone who rides. We are very vulnerable on our bikes especially when passing through inner cities.

The problem is reciprocation. I took a course in February and I got my Iowa license. Unfortunately, Iowa doesn't reciprocate, so there aren't a lot of states that recognize the license . The thing to do is get a non-resident Florida or Utah license which allows something like 30 or so states you can carry in. Still, there are states that won't even allow their own citizens to carry, like Illinois and Wisconsin. I plan on getting the Utah permit.

Ponch, 11 states don't honor Louisiana's permit. The only state I traveled through on the Custer trip that would not honor was Nebraska. Others are California, Oregon, Wisconson, Illinois, Ohio, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Maryland. I can do my share of traveling without passing through any of these states. And, if I do travel through any of them, I can lock the weapon in my saddlebag until I leave. I would be sure to study their laws beforehand though. I'm sure there are those lying in wait ready to throw the book at an illegal packer.

TC, I forgot about Hawaii. New Mexico and Delaware honor Louisiana permits. Open the link below and scroll all the way down to 'Reciprocity'. New Mexico, Iowa, Maine, and Conneticut have not responded to the request. They have not however, refused to honor Louisiana permits.

I am planning to get mine here in NC. Just gotta wait til the end of summer to take the course. I didn't have the permit so I didn't take mine along with me for the Custer trip.

We are not allowed a CC in Canada but it would sure be nice to be able to. I wonder what the laws are about a non resident appying in the states for a permit.

They differ from state to state for a non-resident. Some will flat out deny a permit while some are more lenient.

The best states for non-resident permits are Utah and Florida. I took a course that Utah recognizes so I will apply there. It should give me around 32 states where I am legal.

You have to read the state's laws. When I took the safety course in Iowa, we were told that we'd have to have the pistol locked in a case in one bag and the ammo locked in a case in the other, if we didn't have a permit. Also, in Iowa, I cannot carry two pistols concealed, only one. If I have two, the second has to be secured as if I didn't have permit.

6-8 weeks isn't bad. When I lived in NY it 6 months minimum and more like 8 months. It wasn't due to a back log as much as you just had to wait and it is much more expensive than most places. I think the fee where I lived is now $250 for the first application and a $50 renewal. You also have to purchase a special document every time you want to buy a pistol and I think it's $25. NY is nuts. In Iowa, I think I paid $10 for my permit and I didn't have to bring in my pistols to be examined, and they aren't on my permit.

For a 4 year permit it's $100 for first time applicants and also for renewals. After 65 years old it's $50 for a 4 year permit.
