What Brand of Coolant ?

I just read the thread by bobzinger on changing the coolant, and thought of one question. What's a good coolant to use ? Can you use Prestone Extended Life premix? I also have a Honda Reflex scooter. Will Prestone work in it as well ?

I wouldn't use Prestone.

Get genuine Pro Honda Cool or Kawasaki pre-mixed coolant. They're more expensive, but motorcycles don't hold much. I use 2 quarts in my Nomad plus a couple cups of distilled water to top it off. (Don't be afraid to thin the pre-mixed coolant up to 50% with distilled water.)

The anti-corrosives in auto coolants have silicates and can damage the seals in the Nomad water pump. The outer seal isn't too hard to fix, but if the inner seal gets damaged, you have to tear the engine apart almost completely to replace it.

Ive used Prestone in most of my engines including bikes and snowmobiles for over 25 years and have never had a pump failure or any other failure due to the coolant.

I use Coolanol, a 50/50 premix designed for motorcycle cooling systems. I've been buying it at Cycle Gear, but a lot of bike shops carry it.

Whatever you use, make sure it's safe for aluminum cooling systems.

From what I was told ALL ANTI FREEZE for bike MUST be Silicate FREE!!! It MAY hurt the Seals etc,,,, HONDA AUTO Anti Freeze in a Gal. jug is the same as HONDA MC Anti Freeze CHEAPER and in Gal jug not quart!!!So I AVOID ANY ANTI FREEZE w/ Silicate in it,,,,

I just put in the Honda Pre-Mix and did the same as Cad. Poured in a bit of water to top it off.

Same as Cad here also. Except I don't top off with water, use coolant all the way. We get to cold here in the winter to thin it more. My bike is in cold storage during the winter.

Going into last summer I drained my Sabre and went with liquid ice on a recommendation. Guarantees 50 degrees cooler and all. Didn't believe the hype any more than the ex, but.......trusted my source. Turned out to be spot on! The Honda performed great and the fan came on rarely.

I plan on doing the same with the Nomad very soon, as we are already at 96 - 99 here in Houston.

Thanks for all the replies. I went ahead and used the premix Pro Honda Coolant in my scooter. Nomad is still too new to think about coolant. However, CaddmanQ you are a genius !! I just rode over 200 miles today on 89 octane, and the Nomad performed flawlessly.
