Show Chrome (Big Bike Parts) Heated Grips

Last October 1st. I put on a set of the heated grips. Rathere I had my dealer do it for me. At the time his service tech was concerned as he thought the throttle was quite light weight for such a heavy bike.

I rode for October then put the bike away for the winter. I have had it out for a couple of weeks and only put on about 600KLMS. Last Sunday I went to straighten the front wheel and as I did so the Throtle grip came off.

J&P Cycle would not warranty it but Big Bike was great an said I could return them (they are on b/o) so with some difficulty he arranged for J&P Cycle to replace them. Here are my issues:
  • I now have to take the clutch side and controller off to return them - they are fine. J&P will not send me the new ones without these returned first.[/*:m:pzwa2jxe]
  • Has anyone had problems with these grips on their Nomad[/*:m:pzwa2jxe]
  • Any thoughts on how to remove the clutch side (don't suggest hair dryer - remember these are heated grips and they are chrome.[/*:m:pzwa2jxe]

Welcome any comments.

Can't you just talk them in to only swapping the right side? Or if they could ship first, you can just return the new left with the old right. Maybe they can just charge your credit card until you return?
I doubt that left one will be of any value for anybody if you manage to get it off, so I'm not sure why they'd want it.

I haven't had any history with heated grips but......

Even the HD dealers here in Edmonton don't sell/install them. I guess they have had too many issues with them. Instead they recommended heated gloves.
I know this isn't really the answers you were looking for... but just my two cents on the topic.

Excellent point! In fact yesterday I wrote a letter which I offered to pay for a new set and return the unused left side, controller and defective right side for credit. I sent it via email to J&P Cycles and Big Bike.

I should say Big Bike have been great it is J&P that are being unrealistic. They have not responed to my email yet.

Thanks for the input.

It is helpful info none the less. In the end I may have to go back to a conventional grip.

Far too often we are critical of dealers and their service department. Through this whole ordeal the dealer I work with (Niagara Race Crafters in Virgil ON) have been fantastic. The owner has even agreed to meet me Good Friday (a statutory holiday here) morning to take off the old grips. Put on a set of stock grips until I can get the replacements - and he is doing it pro=bono.

Just thought I would pass this on.

Some dealerships are great, but sadly, most of them suck. My local dealer is one of the really good ones, but back on the subject............ I opted to go with the Gerbing heated gloves. They keep your whole hand and all the fingers and thumbs warm.
