Trip to SD Nomad 1700 problem.

Just got back from South Dakota. Bike ran ok going there. Interstate 90. It was 75 degrees. Then mid 80's there. Rode the black hills was great. Left for home 2 up and full gear. Took hwy 44 thru the Badlands and it was about 100 degrees out. Hit the first big hill and my 2011 Nomad could not get out of its own way. Time i got to the top i was in 3 rd gear and down to 50 mph or less. Full throttle. This happend on every hill. My friends Victory CC Tour climbed it with no problem and in 6th gear. Both bikes are 1700's. My friend behind me has a 06 goldwing trike. He offered to tow me up the hills. My ego was shot. I thinkin it was the heat. We stay the night in Winner SD. Left the next day and it was cooler in the morning about upper 60's. Hit the last 2 big hills before we got to the Missouri river. Same thing happened. Then it was mostly flat. I would say we had about 425 lb with us and gear. suspenion was fine. Only Mods are Racenray's throtle and relocated Air Temp sensor to front of bike. Anyone else have this issue. Maybe K&N filter would help? My friends named my bike Pooch. I think Kaput is better.

Maybe a sensor or the ecm is acting up. It may not be calibrating the changes in elevation.

Nomad does not have a temp gage. The bike did not seem to be running hot. No temp light on or any other light. My gas mileage was in the low 30's to upper 30's depending on speed. The speed limit on the interstate was 75. put my speedo at 80 indicated. Did get 27 mpg at 1 tank full. when there was more up and down hills.

I just rode those same hill a few weeks ago, but my bike only had about 175lbs worth of luggage and rider. I don't even think I had to down shift.

You need to take the bike into a dealer. Somethings not right. We rode in the Black Hills for 2 weeks with any problems. ( 2010 Voyager ) 2 up

Agree. Just rode my Vaquero thru SD Badlands, Beartooth pass, yellowstone, Rockies. NO issue whatsoever going up any hill, or mountain, never noticed any difference even at 12,000 ft

I've been reading about altitude today and i think my bike was running rich because of the air temp sensor up front. It seem like it was starving for more air. It seem like even on the steeper hills here in WI. it wasn't as powerfull up hill. Will be calling RacnRay tomorrow to talk about it. Thought he might see this thread and coment. I will also be getting a new air filter.

Something certainly does not sound right. Keep up posted on what you find out.

Power in the hills

Same here 2010 Voyager. Rode 1200 miles around the Black Hills in July no power problems. Never got below 90 degrees except the one day it rained. Bike is all stock.

Maybe try putting the air sensor back & see if there's a difference.

Definitely would be first course of action. I am no mechanic but Kawasaki engineers designed these bikes to work in all conditions, when you change things like the air temp sensor location to affect one level of performance it stands to reason that a different performance level will be affected also.

If you would happen to bring it in to a dealer and they find that is the problem you will likely be footing the bill yourself.
