? 4 U guys on the darkside
I got my April issue of Rider today.
In the tech section a guy asked about putting a car tire on a motorcycle. Here is what the tech replied; Car tires have a bead which is about 50 percent wider than a motorcycle's, and the corresponding bead widths on the rims mean they're not safley interchangable. Any comments?

I think it's bull. The lip on a Car rim that seats against the bead are not all the same size as well.

I don't know enough to get into the technical aspects, but I watched the mechanic seat the tire on the rim, and it looked just the same as with seating a tire on a car rim; popped right into place. I have over 11,000 miles on my car tire and it looks just like the day it was put on. I don't see a problem.

Not all motorcycle rims are the same I know when I had my goldwing if I wanted to run a car tire I had to have the rim modify at a cost of about a $1000.00 but I think the 1800 goldwing would handle the car tire.

There are 3 areas on a tire bead called Point, Seat and Heal. There are refering to the fact that only 2 areas are making contact with the rim, the Bead and Heal.
I can see there point but a car is much heavier and needs all 3 contacts on the rim. A bike not weighing as much should handle just fine with only 2 points of contact. Look at Poblos milage it seems to work for him. Login or Register to Remove Ads |

If you search the web on "darkside" or "car tires on motorcycles" you will find reams of information from a large multitude of people who have been using car tires on their bikes for many years. Most all of them declare that they will never go back to a motorcycle tire on the rear.

I read that letter in rider, too. I think it's BS as well. The magazine doesn't want to stick their neck out and condone anything that could get them sued. I personally know several guys running car tires who swear they will never run anything else again.

I wonder if there is a car tire manufacturer that makes a tire with the big white sidewall that would fit on a bike? I really like the look of white sidewalls on the Nomad- similar to the Metzler 880's Ringadingh from Canada has on his bike.
