Mobil 1 GRAY cap

The 15W50 Mobil 1 at Walmart in this area has a gray cap, not red. I am considering using it on the next oil change.

It does not have the energy conserving label on it, was wondering if this is the same as the red cap. Want to be sure it does not have friction modifiers in it. Have any of you used the gray cap `15W50 Mobil 1?
Presently have the expensive Mobil 1 10W40 4T MC racing oil in it. Mobil says this is really for the higher revving sport bikes. Seems a little thin on some of the 93 degrees days I have ridden in. Mobil's MC 20 W 5O V-Twin oil is for hotter running air cooled engines .

I use the Mobil 1 V-Twin oil, 20W50. I did let the engine break in properly using the stock oil for one oil change then went to Mobil 1. If you have trouble finding it at WalMart, just go to your local Auto Zone, O'Reilly, etc. and pick it up. I have used the WalMart ST 7317 tech filter on my '05 Nomad from the start and they seem to work great, and the price is definitely good on those filters.

I feel my bike is quieter and smoother shifting. I started using the V-Twin Mobil after the first 2 oil changes. The Walmart ST7317 filter works great and is not expensive. I do have to buy my oil at a parts store as Walmart in my area does not carry it.

The VTWIN is meant for air cooled engines.

That's what I use and it works fine. In the fall I will switch to 10w-40 synthetic for winter riding.

Will the WalMart ST 7317 fit the 1500FI Nomad? Do they have a cross reference book in the store?

So how is Mobil 1 for passenger cars different from Mobil 1 for motorcycles?

First, let's be clear about Mobil 1's overall benefits compared to those of conventional motor oils, whether for passenger cars or motorcycles:

It's a little hard to generalize about the difference between Mobil 1 passenger-car motor oils and Mobil 1 motorcycle oils. That's because not all viscosities of Mobil 1 passenger-car oils have the same levels of zinc and phosphorus, and there are even greater differences among the three Mobil 1 motorcycle oils. In general, Mobil 1 motorcycle oils have:

Additive packages balanced differently for motorcycle engine and transmission operation. For passenger vehicles, fuel economy and emission system protection are higher priorities. These require low phosphorus systems and the use of friction modifiers.

Maybe I can shed a little light on this Nico.

The biggest difference on use between car and bike is that cars don't have wet multi-plate clutches. Remember the clutch is bathed in the same oil as the rest of the engine and splitting hairs the best possible lubrication for the upper end of the bike would be the oil with the least coefficient of friction, or oil with lots of "energy reduction fortifiers"

Problem is this super slippery oil is the EXACT OPPOSITE of what you want your wet clutch to be soaking in since the upper and lower end share the same oil. It can and often does make the clutch slip.

Mobil 1 V-Twin states on the bottle that it was designed for big hot V-Twin air cooled engines, more specifically it was made as a replacement to Harley's own oil. This oil has more zinc which is added as a "coating" agent to the internal parts of the engine. Fortunately, this zinc is good for wet clutches and has no friction modifiers. That the oil states its for air cooled engines means it has less "ash" residue which you can disregard as moot. This idea is that it's strong suit is combating engine heat.

Synthetic Oil has a much higher tolerance for heat which is the #1 killer of heat so with our Nomads this is good. Just need to stay away from friction modifiers.

Lately, I've been thinking of running Shell's Rotella synthetic diesel oil. I have a Dodge TD and I run it in there and it specifically has no friction modifiers and tons of zinc and other component that are good for turbo diesel engines and from what I've read on whats good for motorcycle engines should be the hot ticket for Nomads.

I've heard results from other Nomad owners on clutch operation and smooth shifting and easy start up in very cold weather. Its 5-40 weight oil. Don't let the "5" fool you into thinking thats too thin. Thats just a "measurement" of pour point or the temperature of the oil that it still pours or flows at a certain speed.

So since I'm changing my oil this weekend, the mobile 1 or the rotelle would be better since it's been and will be very hot here in TX?
