Which Fuel Processor

I know this has been discussed before, but technology changes and I'm still confused. For my 2006 1600 with 18,000 [Nomad bought used and came with the pinging installed] I'm planning to install a fuel processor. I have V&H pipes and stock air intake. Alot of detonation on full to 3/4 throttle roll. Yeah a fair amount of back firing on decel too.

I run 91 to 93 depending on availability and mileage [unadjusted] runs 40ish [I'm not a hot rodder]. Haven't changed plugs but the local shop discourages this.

OK - question. Cobra's 2000R runs about $185. The Power commander 3 is about $100 more. Do I need it? What about the PC 5?

And finally, does anyone use the LCD display.

Thanks for your help.

Jim

Had the Power Commander - don't think its worth the money or effort (IMHO) I now have a Cobra Fi2000 now - very simple to set up ( the Nomad is not a high tech bike either). Any one of the tune with a screw driver units is probably best (IMHO). I'm sure more will chime in - alot are using the Doebeck TFI units withe very good success! You need to either marble your bike or coaster it! That will lose the popping on decel.

My vote is for the TFI which I have and love it. Same cost about as you mentioned.

Which Fuel Processor

Jim, I've had a PCIII on my bike on a chasis dyno and a CobraFI2000R. We were playing with exhausts and intakes and charting power and fuel mixtures. We learned that the PCIII has a lot more flexibility than the Cobra (or Dobeck or Techclusion or TFI or Kuryakyn) controller but there is just no need for it. We were able to get a across the board (1800-4800 RPM) air/fuel ratio of 13.1 +/-.2 with both units.
Save the money and go with one of the simplier controllers. With my controller set at 3.25 / 5.5 / 0.5 I run 87 octane regular with no ping and get consitent 38MPG unless I am cruising consistently above 80mph and then I get about 35MPG but I have no ping at all even in high heat and with heavy load.

I have the TFI it works good.
I would go with the TFI or Cobra, the other is just extra money and not needed.

Jim, I have a TFI that I installed in April or May of this year. I'm very satisfied with the unit. It is very easy to tune. The instructions give you baseline settings and you take it from there. When I installed mine, I took pictures and documented hands on instructions. I'll find the thread and attach it in my next post. A few of the guys have the Cobra fi2000, I think that's the model number and they are pleased as well.

Good information, mine has developed more pinging than it used to have (essentially none before) so may need to consider one of these gadgets. Not sure what would have changed from last summer. Gas quality going down (not likely), ECU drifting, injectors clogging...??? Guess I'll run some Sea Foam first.

I installed the Cobra FI2000R and this is the plug and play version. I have been very satisfied with it. With the exception of getting the gas tank to stay about 6 to 7 inches above where it sits, there is no problem attaching it. It comes with easy to follow instructions. Comes preset for your model from the factory.

too funny, well, I've ordered a Fi 2000R. Hope that's close to a no brainer. I've started a little diet of SeaFoam in the tank.

I'll let you know how things are going after the processor, sea foam and my marble are installed.

thanks to all for the feedback,

Jim

Don't take the tank off, just loosen and block it up. You will probably have to take off the line to the tank on the right side, they are marked red and blue. When you put the tank back down, just make sure you don't kink the main fuel line, it's really easy to do, and also don't forget to re-attach the blue and red lines. Should take no more than 30 minutes for install, start to finish.

There is more O2 in cooler Fall air than summer. Now I have no idea, if this is your problem, but it might be in part.

Actually, I was comparing previous summers to this past summer, and this past summer was even a little cooler. Now into the cooler yet fall and problem has gone away for the most part, will have to think about it over the winter. First pinging I hear on a less than hot day will have me putting one processor on order. Had been a firm believer in stock air/fuel flow until this little ditty came along.
