Fuel Processor?

Just curious if a fuel processor helps anything on a stock Nomad? Should one get it even if they don't have aftermarket pipes? Just saw that someone had one and they didn't need premium gas anymore. Any feedback is great!! Thanks!

Some Nomads have problems with knocking and they have been able to fix that issue with fuel processors. Others also, like you said, are able to use regular fuel afterward.

You're not going to see any performance increase until you change air intake and pipes.

My Nomad is stock except for the debaffle. Adding the TFI increased the performance in several ways. It would stumble between 1st and 2nd gear, that's gone. It would ping in hot weather with 93 octane fuel, that's gone. I now use 89 octane in hot weather and 87 in cooler months, no pinging. The fan would kick on every time I pulled up to a traffic light, now I can idle for several minutes in hot weather before the fan will kick on. Much less heat roasting the nuts in stop and go traffic. I'd say every stock Nomad should have a fuel processor installed just to take care of the excessive heat. They are set to run too lean to meet EPA standards. My dealer wanted to install a Power Commander when I complained of the pinging issue. On my dime of course. There was also a noticeable increase in performance. Felt like I gained a few horses when twisting the throttle pretty hard.

the main difference I saw was that the TFI smoothed out the idle and low speed response sigificantly...it would tend to stumble and even cut out if RPM were not kept up on low speed manuvering.....some increase at road speed was also noted....I have the Caddman mod and Cobra true duals on the nomad......I am going to install a Power Commander rather than the Techlusion when I get a chance....have the parts, but not at home with my tools.

+1 to what Cajunrider said. My bike was having all the same issues. I installed the Techlusion plug and play TFI. Driveability has improved. The bike is more fun to drive. The stumbling and pinging was very annoying.

I was one of those who had a nasty pinging problem, which is not surprising given the heat in the Phoenix area. I installed a Cobra FI2000R to richen the mixture and stop the pinging. No pinging on 89 octane now and since I've added the pipes and open intake, the increased performance is a big plus. It runs noticeably cooler, too - which is a real big plus when it's 100 degrees or more out. That's essentially May-September here.

I have an '06 with V&H pipes and stock air. I just installed the Techlusion TFI last night and took it for a quick spin around the neighborhood. I have it set to the manufacturer's recommended settings right now.

My initial impressions are a marked increase in power and easier starts.

I think the TFI is an almost-must for these bikes. They are set to run lean from the factory, and thus require 91 octane to avoid pinging. An octane rating that high should only be necessary on high performance engines with high compression - above the Nomad's 9:1 ratio.

BD and several others on here have noted that the engine runs much cooler with the TFI, with equal gas mileage as stock or maybe just a hair less. It also seems to really wake the motor up.

BD wrote up some pretty detailed instructions on dialing in the TFI for optimum performance and I'm pretty excited to try that out when the riding weather improves. Linkage:

Geoffrey, hope you don’t mind me piggy backing on your tread.
I’m looking into getting a fuel processor also. I’m looking into the
Techlusion TFI and the Cobra Fi2000R.
Question for CJ, I see that you’re the only one I know of that went
with the Cobra Fi2000R, Why? Most people have the TFI. What is the difference
other than price?

After reading so many threads from the guys on here that have done the intake mods and aftermarket pipes, opening up the pipes without opening up the intake helps performance little but sounds better. Opening up the intake without opening up the pipes does little other than lean out the fuel/air mixture even more resulting in more pinging. Opening up both helps a bunch only if you add a fuel processor. If you don't add the fuel processor the pinging will drive you crazy and end up causing engine damage over time. I'm sure all of the gear heads will jump in and either agree or correct anything I may have mis-stated. I have only done the debaffle mod and the fuel processor helped tremendously. Even with no mods, the fuel processor will make it seem like a different bike.

I forgot to mention that I have already done the debaffle a year ago. I really would like to keep the stock pipes and just do the air intake and get a fuel processor. Can this be done and will it give me any boost in performance? Do I need to do both at the same time or can I do one at a time, maybe a year apart.

I did the TFI install and stock muffler debaffle and added a K&N 9" air filter (Caddman mod) all at the same time. All the problems I was having with the bike dissappeared. The stumble on take off between 1st and 2nd, the engine cutting out on low throttle openings, the pinging, and the fan coming on all the time when stuck in traffic were gone. I enjoy riding the bike much more now. I gutted the goatbelly but did not like the sound so I put the stock goatbelly back on. With the gutted goatbelly on the performance seemed to drop off a little also.

Henryk. If you only want to do one mod this year, buy the fuel processor. My advice is to do the fuel processor and intake at the same time to get the full advantage.
