Something to Remember in Hill Country

For those traveling to ride the Hill Country in April:

Be very careful as apparently Nomads are magnetic and draw the beasts.

Thanks ndbigfish. Although anyone can hit a deer just about anytime of the day, that is the very reason why I don't ride in the Hill Country at night.

I hope the rider turns out okay. Sad deal for sure.

Maybe it was a whisper quiet exhaust or the blue/titianum color combination. ;) I've dodged a few of the beasts on Ol' Red for sure. ;)

The only place I don't mind night riding is in town where I know there aren't any deer. I do very little night riding anywhere. Motorcycle/deer crashes aren't very common here but I don't want to be one of the statistics.

Amen to what you all said. I don't care to ride at night unless I have to.

Unfortunately, I have had encounters with deer several times, but I didn't hit them. One time a deer jumped out of the trees and ran parallel with me, then dodged back into the trees. Another time, I had a deer run out and jump over me. He scraped my helmet as he went over me. Had two witnesses on that one.

I was riding behind a guy and saw a deer jump over him. Freaked me out. It was on the inner state in Virginia. He also had blood on his helmet. He didn't even know it until I got him pulled over. Wish I had a picture of that.

You will see deer around here anytime of the day or night. The one I ran over on the bike several years ago popped out of a fence row right at noon. I have had several other close calls with deer riding during the day, usually late morning. The other morning earily there was 15 deer in my yard not 50 feet from the house.

There are more deer on the roads down here than dogs. Can't count the deer I have dodged this last year of riding, mostly at night.

Here in ETex the problem is more about hogs than deer. Lately, there have been many instances where a motorcyclist hit a group of hogs. They can do alot of damage too.

Honestly I think I would rather hit a deer than a hog. A hog is a lot more solid and compact. The only difference might be the size.

I prefer not to bring home the "bacon" that way. Sorry. Dodging deer in the Hill Country is just part of it. Four went across the road in front of me this morning; single file with about twenty yards between each.

There aren't many deer around here, but we have lots of nutria, and last summer I had to dodge an alligator that had the the whole lane blocked.

Skipper, Those gators are very difficult to see on an asphalt road. I ran over a 9' gator a few years ago in my '84 Pontiac Parisienne. It felt like I had jumped over a culvert. No damage to the car but if I had been on a bike it wouldn't have been good. I didn't see it until I was right on top of it. Had the high beams on at the time. I'm wary of deer on country roads where the woods are right up to the shoulder of the highway. Very little time to react if one jumps out. The racoons are plentiful here too. Some of them go over 25 lbs. Heck, just a dead possum on the road is bad enough.

If you see just one, keep looking. Especially after the younguns come along. They don't like to be separated for long.
