Vulcan 1700 Vaquero Oil change

Does the Vulcan 1700 also have a oil screen that needs to be cleaned? I was looking at the oil change procedures in the maintenance guide I it did not mention one, at least under maintenance.

No screen, but unlike the 1600, there are two oil plugs you must remove to drain all of the oil.

Be sure to read the manual as to how to check the oil level. If you check the oil in the precise manner described in the owners manual, you will find that the amount Kawasaki states to use will fill the bike perfectly. If you don't follow the warm-up and check method, the bike will show the oil is low and you will over-fill it.

The 1700 has 2 oil screens, one for each oil pump.
They are both a pain to get to, and don't really need to be cleaned.

I just did my oil change, followed the direction in the owners manual. It was about 60 degrees out, so I warmed the engine for about 10 mins. This got the temperature gauge just past the halfway mark. Turned the motor off waited about 3 mins. Stood the bike up checked the level with 4.5 quarts with the dip stick screwed all the way in. I found that I needed to add a full 5 quarts to get the level to be at the halfway mark on the stick. I know that the engine totally dry requires 5.3 to fill. I do let my bike drain for quite some time when doing a change. It just seemed odd I am so close to the maximum oil fill. How about anyone else? How much oil are you adding to get the level correct?

I had the same issue and then I found oil in my air filter. Next oil change I stuck to what the manual says with filter. It reads fine on the side stand but is low when vertical. Have read in other forums people having the same issues.

From the manual.

Because of the semi-dry sump lubrication system, the
engine oil level indicated on the dipstick will fluctuate
depending on the motorcycle’s position and engine
speed when the engine is shut off. To ensure a proper
reading of the engine oil level, follow the Oil Level
Inspection procedures closely.

I let mine drain for quite sometime and 5 qts puts me pretty near full on a level surface with a filter change.

We've been having some pretty detailed and often differing opinions on this subject, on another Vulcan related website.


To help clarify this somewhat contentious issue, I was able to find the following tech tip which comes directly from Kawasaki. I hope that this helps resolve some of the issues and questions you're having:

Vulcan
® 1700 Oil Level Checking Procedure

Due to the semi-dry sump lubrication system on the Vulcan 1700 models there is a special oil level checking procedure.
Using the chart below, let your bike idle for the time that roughly corresponds to air temperature.
Next
shut the engine off and allow it to sit for another few minutes.

Afterall of the oil is settled make sure yourVulcan 1700 is on level ground and off the kick stand. Remove the oil dipstick, clean it and re-install it, screwing it all the way down.
Remove it again and take your oil level reading.

If you do not allow the unit to idle for a time or fully screw in the dipstick you may get a false oil level reading and
overfill the engine with oil. Too much oil may result in the excess oil being pumped into the air cleaner and

leak
ing
onto the ground.

Air Temperature - Idle Time (minutes)*
4°C (40 °F) - (15)
18°C (65°F) - (10)
38°C (100°F) - (5)

The following is part of my (personal) recent experience on this matter, as quoted from the 'other' site:

"After following the procedure to a 'T', the oil level - after an oil change at the dealership - measured approximately 1/2 way on the dipstick. When I changed the oil myself, it took slightly more than 5 litres before the level measured 'just' below the fill mark on the dipstick (again, following the tech tip procedure). (I checked it again before writing this response.)

This is another fine example of Kawasaki's lack of foresight during the manufacturing process.
In all my (40+) years of motor vehicle ownership/involvement, I have never come across a more complex method used to 'check' the oil level in a motor.
I guess you can just add it to their (Kawi's) other 'errors in judgement', i.e. replacing the shaft drive with a belt drive system. (IMHO)"

I had an 09 Nomad. This is the way to fill it. As I said a few years ago. Follow the manual or you will have oil in the air cleaner. Don't ask how I know this.

My wife has a 2012 Can Am Spyder. The oil check procedure is the same.

AND THAT DIPSTICK IS HOT BY THAT TIME AND YOU SURE DON'T FIDDLE AROUND WITH IT IN & OUT OF THE CRANKCASE CHECKING THE OIL LEVEL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HATCH MARKS.

I too, added a full 5 quarts in to get it in the middle doing the above idle and off time. 1 st time I done this I was about 4.9 quarts, so I would say it is at least fairly consistent.
