View Full Version : Friggin' charcoal
Got all propped up on the back deck with some beer, some shine, and my cigar ready to fire up some kielbasa. Couldn't get the charcoal to stay lit on the grill so I pulled out the chimney starter.
1/4 bottle of lighter fluid later, chimney's full and blazing, and lo' and behold the original coal I thought was crap is a blazing too. Da** it! One may think my choice of beverage played a part in my impatience with the charcoal, but that would be a lie, I think. Cheers to the new-to-me Vulcan forum!
I bet you don't know who invented charcoal.

Those chimneys usually work very well to get the charcoal going. We start it with a few pieces of newspaper, and no lighter fluid at all.

They're best lit with the BBQ cover off though!:D

I have a propane, a natural gas, as well as a charcoal bbq. The first two are convenient, but you cant beat the flavor when cooking over coals.

How did we go from charcoal to specimens? And no I don't like the 21st century a bit. I refuse to partake of it any more than I must. Silly man and his silly rules of law and money and we have neither law or money. If anyone thinks so just tell me what a buck is worth.
Propane for grilling??
Propane is just too efficient. I don't always grill just for the food, i like the smell of the charcoal, being outside and relaxing, etc  If i did that with a propane grill, i'd barely finish a beer before the food was done. I have a propane smoker that i use a good bit in the spring/summer months, 3 charcoal grills, and i gave my gas grill away last year.
For years i didn't understand the taste difference between charcoal and gas or propane grilling, but now I can definitely tell. Charcoal all the way, unless i'm doing an all day smoke on the smoker, then it's propane 'cause the charcoal takes too much concentration to maintain temp for that long. Even then, i toss some charcoal lumps in with the wood to add a bit of flavor to the ribs or pork

I have to agree with you Steve. There is no better flavor than when real charcoal is used for BBQing. But it has to be the real charcoal. Not those square briquets. I get mine from Canadian Tire.

Real wood fires are great too. I plan on building an Adobe/outdoor brick oven and incorporate a smoker at the same time to do meats.
Similar to this but probably not as fancy.

No, he was just saying propane reminds him of his victory...colorless, odorless...lacking in any definable character. Functional, yes, but not something to stir the emotions.

I LOVE THE BLUES...When Loafer and I learn to play those guitar's...we will Knock'em out !
I could relay a story about a BBQ SNAFU...but I was a wild lands fire fighter with the Calif Dept Of Forestry And Fire Protection (CDF),for several years..and now days they do a lot of -laying the blame- for any fires they cant "solve"..On "Disgruntled Former Fire Fighter's"....and there is a good story attached to that statement....but I'll refrain on futher comment !
Instead I'll go out on my patio, and fire up my -gas- BBQ Grill and later we will be having Silent Sam's "Chicken Dun Right" ... It's Feb 12th 2014, and 70 degree's under thin overcast and calm winds !
