1500 just quit at 60 mph....

My 2002 Nomad has about 5,500 miles...took off on a trip to Arkansas last week and about 65 miles from home and at about 60 mph...it just quit running...would NOT restart..it would turn over....pleanty of gas..
The bike is stock except for the power commander.....trailered it to the local shop which is a Honda shop and they looked at it..found a 15 amp fuse under the seat that had burned out..replaced it and during a test drive it blew again....and again...they think it is a bad short but where?? The shop mgr thinks it may be a bad power commander...but they just have no good clue for sure...any ideas..it has never done this before or given me a moments problem...always started right up quickly and run fine...

Yesterday 10-16-2013, I took my 02 NOMAD, Big Assed Bike for a 250 mile ride in the flat-lands of the North Sacramento Valley..
About 200 miles in to the ride..As I tooled along at right about 55 mph...suddenly without any warning the engine quit..and restarted, so quickly I didnt have time to get off the throttle !
About 15 miles later same speed..It Did It Again ! ??? Then, getting close to the house I stopped to refuel.... On ReStart, the fuel pump failed to activate...I recycled the ignition switch and it cycled just as always...got to the house with no further "glitches" ... So Whats Going On ? The Bike has right at 46,000 miles on it...

(and I'm just a UPS delivery away from tearing into the clutch for a "slipping-fix")

When you figure it out please let me know. Sounds like the same problem I have been fighting on my 2000 1500 carbed bike for a long time. Every time I think I have it fixed it will do it again. Totally random. I can't narrow it down. If I get it fixed this time I'll probably get rid of it and get a harley. I like my Nomad but the electrical problems over the years have about changed my mind.

You don't think you could have problems on a HD some who have traded for one have had problems most random elec problems stem from loose connections of some kind either ground on power or bad battery of course with over 100k on your bike you are due a new bike

Yeah but the harley would be something different to tinker with

. I may have actually narrowed my problem down today. I by-passed the kick stand switch and it ran perfect for 20 miles the it had a slight stumble again so that ruled out the kick stand switch. I replaced the ignition switch with a new OEM yesterday so that's ruled out. I have 6.1 volts to the grey wire at the igniter so that's good. When I got home I found the power switch on the handle bar may have an intermittent problem. I cranked it about 100 times and every now and then it wouldn't start or it had a long cranking time before it would start. Sometimes it would crank soon as I touched the button. I'm thinking that may be where my problem is. I'll by-pass that switch and see if thats the problem. Eventually I'll find it. That switch has been pushed a lot of times in over 105,000 miles

Hey zoom45..sonds like you are more knowldeable/patient with -"electri-crap", than I am ! ...so you may be on to the source of the intermittent shut-down...with the "kill switch" investigation (my start button fails to engage sometimes..all interconnected on that side !)

As for the idea of trading for a Harley...I am in love with the sound of the Harley engine (& the big Radial Aircraft Engines, that sound like "a herd of Harley's)

I always try to ride behind any Harleys when riding in a group...and have "toyed" with the idea of running super quiet mufflers on my Nomad --And hooking up some big speakers, and having a recording of a Harley coming out of them! :>) ...

HOWEVER...My Nomad Never has Broke Down Out In The Wind...and I see Harley owners --pre-planing each leg of any trip they take..as to the availability of a Harley Repair Shop !

I think that's my problem. The red button (kill switch) on the handlebar gets it's fire from the 10 amp fuse in the fuse box. It sends fire to the yellow/red wire on the red button. When you turn it on, the fire goes to the red wire on the red button and powers the start button, sends fire to both coils and the fuel pump. If the switch has an intermittent contact it could cut fire to the coils and the fuel pump. I put in an on/off toggle switch to by-pass the kill switch. I connected it in the headlamp bucket near the red plug that goes to the kill switch. One wire goes to the yellow/red wire and the other to the red wire. If it stumbles while riding again I can flip the switch on and if it runs the kill switch is my problem. I drove it 50 miles today without an issue.

..In College...Aero Space Engineering...my worst grades were in "Aircraft Electrical" ..and that carry's over to Motorcycle Electrical, it seems !

But that was - way befor- "craputer-electronics" .. Now day's I dont even open the hood on any vehicle newer than 1970 (but I do tinker some, with my Big Assed Bike !)

Cleaned the kick stand switch with some spray "lite lube"...
dismantled the kill switch and starter button assy (shot some white lithium and spray lube mix into the throttle cable housings, while opened up !)

long story short..she still has the entermittent- instantanious, snuff and re-ignite..while cruising along ..so I'm going for the.."put a lite in the hot wire" theory..and see if its blinks off when it happens... ! ? at least I may be able to check-off the kill switch/power suspicions !

i dont get why diodes are so frustrating. they are a GOOD thing!

most of your relays also have a diode inside of them to help protect your electronics

UPDATE:...went for a ride sunday (11-24)..about 5 miles into it...my Big Assed 02 Nomad, began to buck & jerk..for about 1/4 mile..as the engine cut out, and re-ignited in a rapid manner !

Suddenly the engine began "running smooth as new"...and I had no more issues on the entire 55 mile ride...

When I got back here.. to Margarita Flats..I found my "Fire & Steel" Driving Lites..were dead !

I'll up-date on the connection between the driving lights..and the engine cut out issues..as soon as I explore the situation... ! (a few day's)

Addendum: 1-15-2014 .. I found my Prototype Seat has chafed insulation off a couple wires i had routed under it...I might have found my electrical problem -more when I repair & test it all out !

Sounds like a wiring problem, check to see how the lights are wired up, that may be the problem.

Stator??? A friend who had a c90 had similar symptoms and it was the stator, a known c90 issue
