SCR Rally

The SouthCentral Rally will be June 7-8-9 in Van Buren Arkansas

The base motel is

Travelers Inn
3109 Alma Hwy.
Van Buren, AR. 72956
479-474-2378

There are no rooms available at the base motel.
There are plenty of motels in town.
The Super 8 and the Motel 6 in Van Buren
And the Days Inn in Alma are good choices.

Here's what we have planned

Wednesday: Arrival day.

We'll have some cold drinks etc. ready at the motel. We plan on getting together for dinner.
Probably across the street from the motel at the Western Sizzlin.

Thursday: Devil's Den Ride (Map)

We will ride into Oklahoma to visit Sequoyah's Cabin near Sallisaw.
Sequoyah is the inventor of the Cherokee's alphabet.
Just an FYI....just west of the cabin we will ride past the Akins Cemetery.
Last stop for the 30's gangster "Pretty Boy Floyd"
We'll then go north on U.S. 59 to the Cookson Hills before turning east back to Arkansas.
Then we will ride into the Boston mountains and stop at Devil's Den State Park near Winslow.
We will take U.S. 71 south and AR 282 from there going back to Van Buren.
This is about 150 miles and should get us back to the motel by mid-afternoon.

Friday: Mt. Magazine Ride (Map)

We will go the other direction and ride south on U.S. 71 to Waldron.
Then east on AR 28. We'll ride on the north side of Lake Nimrod the oldest ACOE lake in the state.
From there north on AR 7 then west to the lodge at Mt. Magazine State Park.
It's Arkansas's newest state park. Signal Hill, a peak on the mountain is the highest point in the state.
The plan is to have lunch at the lodge before riding north to Paris.
To get back across the river we'll go to Ozark and then head west to Van Buren.
Most of this ride is before we get to Mt. Magazine.
So we need plan on starting about 8:00 and lunch about 1:00
This is about 235 miles.

Saturday: There are no planned rides.

We will have some suggestions for rides if anyone is interested.
And Jim "Dooley" has offered to lead a ride on the Pig Trail.

In Van Buren The Old Town Bike Show will start at 8:00 Saturday on main street.
Main street is a good place to walk around and window shop.
And there are plenty of places to eat. Crystal gives the pie at the Cottage Cafe two thumbs up.

Last but not least a BBQ dinner is planned for Saturday evening.

Ft. Smith is just the other side of the river and is home to Judge Parkers Courthouse.
The famous "Hangin' Judge" made popular in the movie True Grit.
Also the Ft. Smith Museum of History has a collection of things from former Ft. Smith resident,
Gen. William O. Darby founder of the U.S. Army Rangers.

In the near future we will post more info on things to do in the area in case anyone is interested.

Also we need everyone that can to bring some item for the auction and for the goodie bags.

Come on folks lets try to have the biggest and best rally every.

Sounds good. Any more information on things to do and is Jim still planning on the ride for the Pigs Trail? I would guess the car show is at 8:00 p.m.?

Al it is a bike show and it is all day Saturday.
I can not tell you how much Dave has done for this rally but it will be more like a raffle like the one we had in Eureka Springs so every body come and bring a little something and lets make this a great rally for Dave & Crystal and all their hard work.

As Jim said the Bike Show starts Saturday morning on Main St. in Van Buren.

Jim "Dooley" has offered to lead a ride on the Pig Trail Saturday. I'm sure that offer is still good.

Here's a list of a few other things to do in the area.

If you are headed south after the rally you might consider stopping at Washington State Park

There are two civil war battlefields in northwest Arkansas.
Pea Ridge Battlefield
and Prairie Grove Battlefield

East of Van Buren in the town of Altus are several wineries
Wiederkehr Wine Cellars has tours and wine tastings.

Also east of town is Mt. Nebo State Park. The road up the mountain is crooked and steep.

We will pass by Lake Ft. Smith on Thursdays ride.

You can go canoeing on the Mulberry river. Better make reservations at Turner Bend Outfitters if you want to go.

Although setup more for kids the Janet Huckabee Nature Center is close by.

Or you could ride the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad to Winslow.
You'll need reservations for that as well.

I plan on going to the bike show, then back to the motel for a cold Budweiser
And to keep plenty of scotch in the cook.

Yes. Judge Parkers courthouse and the old jail are only about 15 minutes from the motel.
Located at 3rd and Parker in downtown Ft. Smith.
Just an FYI. Those are not the original gallows. Those burned along time ago.
It's worth checking out, especially if you find the history of the old west interesting.

Dave and Crystal.... thanks for all your hard work and planning that you've made into this rally.

Kathy and I will be leaving around 10am on Wednesday. I'll be riding, she'll be following in the car. Packed in the car will be VBA banners, Canopy tent as well as tools, etc, etc for the rally. We'll be arriving in Van Buren sometime around 3-4pm.

Kathy is going to ride with me on the Thursday ride but will probably shop on Fri and Sat.

See you guys then... looking forward to seeing everyone!

Thank you Dave and Crystal for all of the work you guys put into this rally. I was afraid I was going to miss it but I had a room reserved all along just in case. We will be there. Looking forward to seeing all of the old friends and meeting some new ones. Ride safely everyone.

I live in the area as well and can suggest a few routes as well for those that would like to see part of Hwy23 but it might be what Dooley has planned. There are many different options in the area.
