V&H baffles
CME,
As you know from another thread, I removed the baffles from my Vance & Hines baggers. I plan on cutting the baffles in half and putting them back in because it is way too loud. The packing is shot so I will have to replace it. What type of fiberglass is safe to use for this? This is a real question stud muffin. Nice Nico Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Thank you for this post. I have V&H dual baggers with the baffles out. I like the loudness, but I get a bit of a "tin" sound. It's too quiet for me with the baffles in, so I too will try halfing them and see how they sound.

Cutting the baffle in half will only increase the noise level. Cutting the baffle in half will not double the noise because sound waves don't work like that. DOUBLING the length of the baffle will decrease the noise level, but not by half, again because sound waves don't work that way. My VN1600 has V&H Bigshots with straight through baffles (no packing), STUPID loud in my opinion. I bought the bike used so the PO installed the loud pipes. So I installed the V&H Super Q baffles which feature the fibreglas packing and only a 1" hole onto the baffle from the side of the baffle nose. More quiet than the straight through baffle, but not by much, still too loud for my ears.
So the next move is to ADD length to the baffle. I'll add a deflector/divider welded onto the inlet side of the baffle, which will cause the exhaust flow to move around the deflector and break up the sound waves. As sound waves move slower the pitch of the sound gets lower, which is generally more pleasing. |

I added 6” to my V&H and it was still annoyingly loud.

Hmm, what did you do to add 6" to the baffles? Weld on another section of straight through baffle? My plan is to add a folded deflector section ahead of the Super-Q baffle. The Super-Q baffle is the left most section with the packing around it. Note that the Super-Q baffle has a single inlet hole about 1" diameter. Even with that in the Big Shots exhaust it is still too loud/raspy for my taste. The Super-Q baffle only extends into the outlet pipe about halfway, and leaves an area ahead of the baffle that is empty. Usually an empty area is good to reduce the harsh tones because it acts as a damper. However, there is not enough open volume in this area to dampen the noise level any amount. So the added deflector section should disrupt the exhaust flow which slows the sound wave, and lower the sound wave frequency.
The other option is to weld the straight through baffle originally in the Big Shots onto the inlet end of the Super-Q baffle, but then to also add deflectors into the added baffle to also disrupt the exhaust flow. Login or Register to Remove Ads

I added a 6” piece of perforated baffle material and wrapped it with baffle material.

If adding more straight through baffle with packing material to the already straight through baffle, the issue its still a straight through exhaust flow. Big part of the challenge of aftermarket exhausts is they are straight through designs, and they all lack any muffler volume to dampen out the strongest noises from the engine.
If even doubling the length of the baffles, and with packing, the issue is still that the exhaust flow has a straight path out through the baffles. The packing helps to quiet the higher pitch/high energy exhaust noise, but does almost nothing for the mid and lower sound frequencies. What I notice about hi-flow/lower noise car mufflers like from Flowmaster and Magnaflo is their designs use no packing, but feature multiple chambers and deflectors in larger volume chambers. The chambers and deflectors require the exhaust flow to make multiple turns and direction changes. Each direction change takes energy from the exhaust flow with little restriction. I designed and built a multi-chamber/deflector internals for the muffler on my 94 BMW R1100RS, with no packing, and I got good airflow with only moderate increase in sound. No one has ever complained about the nose level. I know I got better flow because I had to adjust the air/fuel mix to avoid excessive popping on decel.

I've posted previously about welding a short drag pipe baffle into the front of my V&H baffles for the Cruzer pipes on my 800. That was the perfect solution, and allowed tuning of the sound by bending the intruding tabs out of the way until I had exactly the tone I wanted, with none of that deceleration "blat".
They're readily available on Ebay for cheap.

Click the link. Drag pipe baffles disturb that straight through exhaust flow, in a very similar way to what you're trying to achieve in your drawing. There's no packing material at all. Mine ended up no longer than the smallest set shown, but they were enough to quiet the obnoxious V&H Cruzers and allow me to remain friends with my neighbors with whom I share a long driveway.

Hey, haven't been on here in awhile don't have my nomad anymore but could you tell me what is the outside diameter of those baffles ? in other words need to know what inside of the pipes are for sliding them in.
