Is there a better final drive Oil fill plug?
Does anyone know of or recommend a better design of fill plug for the final drive?
I really don’t care for the slotted oem plug. Wondering if there is a suitable aftermarket item?

There may be an oil filler plug that will fit, but the final drive plug is almost invisible to see unless you remove the sidebag, I can't see the bother of wanting to replace it unless its damaged .

I never tried, but is the engine oil fill cap the same size and thread? If so, there are a dozen oil fill caps out there for the 1500/1600. As Ringadingh stated, not sure it's worth effort.

That’s a good point. Next time I change oil, I will try the engine oil plug and see if it works, then I will know what my options are.
Ringadingh, you are exactly right, the previous owner boogered up the slots a little bit, so it is hard to get a good bite on it when tightening it down. I looked at an oem replacement, but it looks like they run about $30 plus shipping. Since mine still works, I’m not too worried about it, but i wouldn’t mind replacing it one of these days, I just hate to spend that kind of money for the oem item.

Try the one under the seat.

CactusJack,
I don’t understand. Do you mean the tool pouch under the seat?

No, it was an (apparently) poor attempt at humor.

I think you just need a larger head screwdriver. That is what I used on My 1500 classic. The normal ones will make the slot really sloppy and even sloppier over time. I think that is the part you do not like, I know I did not like it either. But a massive screwdriver was my solution.

Large washer, then use a screwdriver through the hole wont harm the slot. I keep one in my tool bag.

Drag link socket works, just have to make sure you get one with a thinner slot, http://tinyurl.com/y929tuo4 .............Mike

As mentioned all you need is a large washer.wrench or screw driver to turn it.. I took a old socket and cut a slot in it to fit the washer. it fit tight w/o welding for me, Plus side was I could use a torque wrench if I wanted :) I still have it some where and have a pic of it somewhere

I too just use a large flat washer and screwdriver, slot still looks good in the plug.

I have a double headed wrench that came in a tool kit from one of my bikes....can't remember which one. Works for oil cap and rear end also.
