Need tire Help! Will 180 mess with my Digital Read Outs?

Alright guys, need some help, The 2010 1700 Nomad is ready for new rubber, I just bought her in the spring of 2012 and got about 9500 on her before the OEM Exedra was about to show cords, Im needing a new tire and ive been procrastinating and now ive got to get one soon,

Ive seen many many things about this, And all the tires that fit the bike stock size of 170/70/16 seem to get Horrible reviews, i need to get at least 10k out of a tire. The Stones clearly suck, The Dunlops ive heard arent great.

Ive seen lots of other brands such as Metzler, but they only come in a 180.

So i guess this is a 2 parts Question, Most importanly i want to know for those of you who chose to go with a 180, how did it effect your Speedometer, and Mileage Guage, Ect.. Since a 180 is wider, and slightly taller, does any make any major effect? i dont want my guages to be off?

Second part of question... Im sure this will draw opionon of course.. What do you reccomend and what kind of mileage did you get?

I do alot of 2 up riding, and a few long distance trips a year for a total of about 10-12000 miles a year, A tires has to at least last me that long.

Avon Cobra 180 for the rear is very popular as a replacement on a 1600. Much better handling than the stock stones. and some report better life. If your 1700 is anything like the 1600 the speedo is off by about 10kmh anyway. I believe Mine is a 180/60 which has a side wall height slightly less than the stock 170/70 (11mm).

get a speedohealer, works great to compensate, easy to program, and you can put any size tire on that the bike will take. Or just do what a lot do, go by the readout on the GPS if you use one.

You speedometer is already inaccurate from the factory. A taller tire gets it closer to accurate.

Or use a GPS as a speedometer.

I ran Avon Cobra tires 150/80 R16 and 180/70 R16 on my 2008 Nomad and was totally satisfied with the overall performance. Never calculated the correction on the speedo, etc but I thought it was improved. As far as tire life, I was getting 20K-plus km (12.5K-plus miles) but I ride solo without excessive luggage and don't do burnouts or other crazy things..

I am very happy with the mileage I'm getting with the Michelin Commander II on my Vaquero. With 12,000 miles on it I still have over 4/32 of tread left. It's a 180x65 and fits just fine. The speedo difference is minimal, which is to say it is still inaccurate.

OK, i did not know they were not accuracte from the factory, but makes sense, So im definetly not worried about a 180 anymore.

now for the NEXT Question. Radial or Bias? I basically know the difference, and i know the Nomads come with Bias and the Owners Manual says to only use Bias, But i know you can do whatever you want.

Anyone have any feedback? And if you used Radial on the rear, will that effect me since i still have the stock Bias Stone on the front?

Dunlop E3 bias, 160/80B16. Bit taller than stock so makes the speedometer almost accurate.
I've had 8 of them on my 1700, got 25,000 miles (40,000 kms) from each one except for a few removed early due to punctures.
They do hum a bit when near worn out, handle better than the 170, stick well even when wet.

If its mileage you want, "COME TO THE DARK SIDE". I have over 20K miles on my Goodyear Triple Tread 205/60r16 and it still has about half of the usable tread. Just installed a Dunlop K700 Sport Touring Rear designation 150/80r16 on the front. Dyna Beads in both keeps things smooth.

BTW, a 205 won't fit on a 1700 without modification of the swing arm. There are lots of options on the DARK SIDE. The 205 on Grace can be seen in my sig. pic.

09 Nomad and I'm running a bias Michelin Commander 2 130/9016 front and a Dunlop E3 Radial 180/70-16 rear and am loving it.

Coming up on 10,000 miles on them and not seeing too much wear.

Same as others...gauges are already off from the factory, but it's not too far off.

Thanks for all the info, Not into the Darkside, Do to much riding in the twisties to have a car tire i think. But glad to here 180 is fine, was not aware speedo was off, but like i said just bought her last year. Will most likely going to try a Metzler Bias 180-70-16, or maybe the Dunlop.

To each their own. Just for the record though, Dark Side does not slow you down in the twisties.
