My 2000 -1500Fi Need's new Front Beveled Gear!

My 2000 - 1500Fi has been making a wining noise when I let off the throttle took it to the dealer and they said it sound like it's the Front beveled gear of the drive shaft, check on the price and the dealer quoted me $760.00 for 2 gears and a bearing, I looked online and found it for $602.00 Does anybody know where I can find it Cheaper?

The gears may still be ok if you caught it in time, a new bearing may be all you need. You won't know for sure until you get it apart and take a look.

Pull the bevel gear and see which bearing is bad.

I used to get them from a local bearing supplier. Just give them the number on the bearing.

If I remember correctly they were around $20 each here.

How difficult is this to do? For some reason I was thinking that the engine needed pulled and the case split. Maybe that is needed for the gear and not the bearings?

You have to remove the rear wheel, LH engine sidecover, final drive and driveshaft, then you will be able to get at it. there should be no need to pull the motor.

Idaho, I am probably going to by one of your Idaho jack adapters so I can tear my nomad down and see if it's the bearing or the beveled gears {Hopefully it's just the bearing}. How much did you say you are selling them for?

dnlaw, sorry I missed your question. The adapter is $45 plus $15 shipping to the lower 48. You can't use it for this job though. As I understand it after you get the rear wheel and swing arm off you need to unbolt the engine from the frame and jack up the engine about 3/4 inch to get to another bolt. My adapter would be in the way.

I will sell you one for when you change oil, or tires, or bleed brakes, or just about any other maintenance or cleaning that your heart desires. :-)

Yes there is a good bit of tear down involved. You have to pull the rear wheel so you can drop the swingarm and disconnect the driveshaft. It's either that or pull the motor.

Most likely it is the bearing behind the inspection cover. Once the bevel gear drive is removed,if you shake it and it rattles it will be this bearing. To remove it without special tools loosen the bolt behind the inspection cover while holding the nut inside the gear the driveshaft attaches to. Then just disassemble and take the bearing to your local bearing distributor to match up. It will be less than $20.00, or you can pay more and get it from Kaw or Ron Ayers, Bike Bandit, etc.

If it is the bearing on the output, you WILL need a bearing seperator or take it and have it pressed off and on.

$20 for each bearing and $26 for the gasket and several hours of your time or over $1000 to have the stealership or any shop fix it.

You can call me at 561-210-3399 with questions.

A friend is dropping off his 03 Meanstreak tonight with the same problem. I'll replace the bearings for him and save him a bunch of $$$.
