Out of Round Old Tires from Jake Wilson

I bought an Avon Venom front tire on-line from Jake Wilson. After having the tire mounted and riding about 200K for break-in I noticed up and down gyration in the front forks. I lifted the front wheel, took off the calipers and checked the front wheel using a pencil taped to a floor jack. The tire was out of round at least 1/8". I called the supplier to report that and told them I was unhappy the tire sent me was made week 50 of 2011. That's nearly 2 years and old stock as far as I am concerned and asked them to send me a newer replacement. They paid for the shipping to return it and promptly shipped me a new tire which is also week 50 of 2011. WTH??

I had it mounted and balanced and hey, it looks out of round too testing the same way, although I have not taken it for a ride yet.

This is a first for me. I have never seen this before in tires I have bought from Dennis Kirk or Southwest Moto.

Has anyone else had this problem with this or other on-line suppliers?

I have bought several tires and other items from them and never had a problem. As far as age of the tire-I've bought and used tires older than that without problems. I just bought a 2012 Voyager off the show room floor that has 2yo tires.

The tires age wouldn't bother me at all either, as far as the out of round, is the tire seated properly on the rim? It may take a few miles to settle in properly if it isn't.

Perhaps you should check if your rim is out of round first just to make sure that it actually is the tires or how they are sitting at the bead.

Rim out of round??? You been bangin' into any big boulders lately, Hammer?

Nope the boulder took out my left engine guard and cracked my rad a little bit. I'm good! Those signs warning of rocks falling down slopes will be more real to me now!

The chopstick is very analog. Works for pokin' and holding electrical and stuff you don't want to mark up. I keep 2 in my saddle bag just in case of mechanical problems or good Schezuan.

You never know what will keep you on the road in an emergency. Like flattened coke cans and pipe clamps to keep my broken V&H rear header together to get me home. Adapt and overcome.

Two hundred thousand miles is one hell of a break in period

Two bad tires? Unlikely. I'd check the wheel for out of round. On the other hand...maybe that's why Jake Wilson has such low prices?

Less popular tires will nearly always be two years old or so. I bought Venoms from another dealer and they were nearly the same age as yours; about two years. The Venoms didn't last well for me and I'm not an Avon fan. If you want the newest tires; your best bet is a dealer so that you can check the date codes. Tire age is lost on most mail order suppliers.

Good feed back. 200K is 200 Kilometers for us Canadians.

The age can be a problem depending on how they are stored. It at least looked like it had been wrapped well but it was obvious it had been sitting on or against something as it has a line scar/depression across the tread in one spot.

The first thing I did is check the wheel, no problems there. I may get the tire re-seated on the bead, although I doubt that is the problem too. I have never seen this on any other tires I have done. I always check them on the axle before I re-install the brake calipers.

The old Bridgestone at was round even if a little cupped at end of life.

What bugged me is exactly the same week and year? Seemed to me you would have an optimum chance of getting another bad tire if they are from the same batch.

Bottom line is I have never had a bad tire new like this from any other supplier.

Out of round rim on an '06 Nomad is not very likely, off the bead sounds do-able.

It is pelting with rain now and will be for the coming week. I am going to leave it jacked up while I service the brake calipers anyway and monitor the tire pressure after pumping it up to 44 psi. If the bead is not seated right it should slowly bleed air.

If it turns out it's the tire I will send it back and try something else even if I have to go back to a Stone.

Try this, with the bike jacked up draw a pencil line on the tire right at the rim (both sides), now let all the air out of the tire, push the tire with your hand off the rim just to brake the seal. Now after doing this all around the tire/wheel, put air in the tire. If the pencil line is not the same, then the tire may have been not seated even making it out of round. I had it happen to me and did this and it worked out, it cost you nothing to try it and may work for you. Just my two cents..mj
