What we did Wednesday after Coffee
Check out the YouTube video shot by one of my friends during a great ride the other day after coffee. Clear blue skies, dry pavement, sunshine and no wind. He shot it from his Gold Wing. I was leading this ride. It only shows part of the ride, but I don't think you can post 4 hour YouTube videos. We rode north out of Boise on Hwy 55 to Banks, then east to Lowman, with a lunch stop at the Sourdough Lodge, then south on Hwy 21 to Idaho City for Ice Cream before heading the rest of the way back to Boise.

Majestic country and still lots of snow. Why was he following so far behind? Great video.

Great scenery! Thanks for sharing.
I rode with a neighbor once. He was used to riding with the local Gold Wing group. All day he was at least a quarter mile behind. After a few minutes I stopped to ask him if he was having problems with the bike, or the speed I was doing. He said that he was used to talking on the radio with riders and they didn't like riding to close to one another. I haven't been on a ride with him since. If I'm going to feel like I'm alone out there, I might as well be.

Looks like it was a great day for riding. I agree with 'loafer' on riding too far apart. We don't have that many spacious skies and open roads around here where you do not see another vehicle for hours and when I ride with some guys they lag too far behind and cagers break in and you end up with one on your tail. When you lag too far you also lose the benefit of the visual impact that multiple bikes/headlights/helmets present that make a group much more visable to other drivers. (safety in numbers?)

Cool video... that had to be a COLD ride! that wide angle made it look like your buddy rides left of center on twisty roads. I've learned over the years that thats the worst place to be on mountain roads.
I always ride right of center on roads like that to avoid cagers crossing over...

Very beautiful country out there. I'm not trying to insult your roads, but man those are some rough looking roads (condition of pavement). I've noticed that the states with hard winters, usually has rough pavement conditions. It looks like all had a good ride, and if you time the bike in front of the camera from when he goes into a curve, until the camera gets there, y'all aren't as far apart as it looks. And yes, it is wise on mountain roads to stay in the right 1/2 of your lane.

Always ride left center so that you have more pavement to carve around corner to the right. Right center to carve around to left corners. Avoid center area of pavement, thats were the hump is, oil from cagers and debris that cagers don't travel may lay in waiting for bikes. :)
Nice riding area..thanks for the clip

We always ride with a group of Wingers, and no one lags, no one is slow. Normally it's always the same group, so we all know how each other rides. That familiarity makes for great rides.
The mountain roads here get quite a beating from Ol' Man Winter, and when things thaw out during Spring, there's all those frost heaves. Actually, the road was smoother than it looks in the video. Seems no matter when they resurface the roads around here, the chip seal goes to pot over a single season. Yeah, I noticed he was crowding the centerline pretty good there a couple of times. Jack's a good rider, though. Used to race bikes years ago. I suspect that he'll provide more of those videos as the season progresses. |
