Should I quit riding ?
Who else thinks this is a stupid statement ?
"Don't ride any faster than you want to slide" Well I sure as hell don't want to slide at all so should I quit riding?

What if we applied that same logic to other things?
Don't climb higher than you want to fall. Don't drink more beer than you want to puke back up. Don't swim in water deeper than you want to drown in. With that kind of negative logic, we'd never get anything accomplished because we'd be too afraid of the potential outcome.

Yep, stupid statement. If paranoria ran my life, I'd never get out of bed.
My contribution to dumb statements: "Never run faster than your legs will take you"

I think I remember seeing that on someone's sig. Can't recall who has it but I am sure someone does.
You are right TC I wouldn't want to slide at 5 MPH, but I'm not going to stop riding.

That is where I saw it Gene.
Maybe he will come on here and explain the meaning

I guess I can ride to 70mph - last May I slid a long way, starting at 70, went 100-150 feet without much trouble. Landing in the pile of rocks was a different story, however

Sliding isn't nearly as bad as bouncing or rolling. If I'm ever in another motorcycle wreck I hope to slide rather than some other options.

I suspect that it means "Do not over ride your abilities"

M dad used to say to us when we took the boat out...
"Don't approach the dock any faster than you care to hit it". It made sense to me and still does...

OK, I'm about to show how stupid I've been . . .
I've been riding for a while, not always responsibly. Went down at 105 mph = friction burns and bruises, walked away, totaled the bike and a good set of leathers. 96 mph = road rash, 14 stitches, walked away, totaled the bike and another set of leathers. 25 mph = broken bones, torn intercostal tissues, loss of career, 18 months (so far) in court. The Nomad survived with some new parts, but she's still scratched up. If you ask me, sliding ain't too bad, bouncing sucks!

Yes, that makes sense.
Don't ride any faster than you care to slide makes no sense.

I sometimes like to go fast, and I slid pretty far also. Nuff said!

I think that if you take that statement into consideration and wear the appropriate gear for the speeds you are planning on travelling then it does make sense.
The faster you go the further you will slide. If you are just riding around town on 30 MPH roads you can probably get away with wearing Denim and not loose your skin. If you are on 50 MPH roads and go down the demim better be reinforced with Kevlar Any faster and you better have your leathers on your legs. Same goes for jacket, gloves, and boots.

I went down at around 75mph and my leather jacket was shredded in a couple seconds as were my gloves. I wish i had better pants on that day as my knees really took a good grinding as well. The good thing is that six months later almost all the scars are gone, just a few faint ones left.
