When I do this here in California I ride to the left side of the lane. I know that makes it harder for drivers to see me in their side view mirror but when I get into the merging section I move to the center of the lane so they can see me better. If there are no cars on my a$$ I will also slow down so cars can merge in if they want.

I do like the fact that the white lines are wide enough to use as an escape route if lane splitting in the car pool lane. I bet that is not allowed in Canada though.
