choice of oil to put in my 1700 classic
wouls the Valvoline 4-stroke motorcycle oil be good to run in my bike it has 11000 mile on it or would anyone have another suggestion. I'm dong my oil change for the first time on my own.

I am a big believer in using high end, synthetic motorcycle oil. I run Motul. But the reality is, If you change your oil frequently, and use decent filters, you can use any good oil.

OMG you really opened up a can of oil there. The most Important thing is to have a good oil filter wrench. Be prepared for the opinions.

When choosing an oil just make sure it has the Jaso rating for bikes to avoid putting in automotive oil which may have friction modifiers and be hard on the clutch.

Do a google search "Bob the Oil Guy" everything you would want to know about oil.
I use just plain O Valvoline 20-50 Black Container and top rated Purolator Filter "Pure ONE" PL14610 on our 1500 nomad and past.

Can of worms/oil LOL I used syn in my 2004 Nomad. Started having oil leaks. Quit using it, no leaks. Started using Kawaski Genuine oil. No problem. Now have a 2009 1700 Nomad. Same oil. No problems. In my eyes I use their oil. Can't say that I screwed up my bike because of oil. Reason I am saying this is that I had a car with extended warrenty and they claimed the oil I used caused the problem. It wasn't genuine oil for the make of car. Well I won the suit, but it was something I don't want to go thru again. Use what you want, but I am sticking to Kawasaki oil. If I had a Yamaha I would use their oil.

Change the fluids regularly. Use quality products, you'll be fine. For the record, I too use the PL14610 or Bosch 3323 filters.

Thanks Smokier for the cross reference on the bosch filter. I have a frsm in there now. K&N filter scared the crap outta me when I went on a 200 mile ride and when I got home I found oil sprayed all over the pipes and swing arm, than God none got to the tire. The filter had the rubber gasket kinked in one spot and allowed oil to leak out. This wasn't my first rodeo and I have done a million oil changes on bikes and cars.

The hardest thing for any of us, me included, is to admit when we've f@%#ed up. Blaming it on something else seems always to be the easiest way to go. I've been known to take that route also. Don't spread that around though. But a million oil changes, that's one busy little beaver. And, one magic oil filter to bugger up its gasket on its own. Especially after it's been checked right after installation for leaks. Who would have thought, one in a million. I'm fully prepared and standing by for a good insult. Make it a real zinger.

I personally would not put a synthetic oil in a wet clutch environment, it is not "engine oil only" at that point, and you are gamblng that you will "get away with it", unless you are racing, and rebuild your clutch every other day. Also, some penny-pinchers will put super cheap diesel truck oil in their bikes (Rotella).... they are gamblers also. ALL diesel trucks have at least a 3-4 GALLON oiling system, each molecule of oil is subjected to less lifetime stress than the puny 4-5 quarts in your bike. Not to mention the fact that diesel ENGINES do not share the oil with a transmission that imposes higher shearing forces. And the kicker...... diesel engine oil is designed for diesel engines which have RPM limits that are HALF of what your cycle engine is designed for. That's why Rotella is so much cheaper than motorcycle oil. Yes, diesels have exhaust heat, MORE than your cycle engine, but your engine revs higher & shares the oil with the transmission and clutch. It really is an apples and oranges comparison. My personal favorite is Motul 3000, no syn. After trying several different oils in my Vmax for the first 30,000 miles (Bel-Ray, etc.) I found Motul. Noticed improved shifting within 1000 miles. Stuck with it ever since, to over 100,000 miles on my Vmax, and now my Vaquero.

Best oil? The brand you find comfort in using. Best filter? Same as the best oil.
Scheduled maintenance is the key. Some may require it more often, some less. But they all require it.
