Sidecar on a Nomad
I just did a forum search and came up with three pages of threads with only two that I could see having anything to do with sidecars, one by a member who had just removed his and another a 1500 with a Dauntless installed sidecar for sale out of La Pine, OR.
Soooo....Do any of our current members have a sidecar mounted and how is it working our for you? I am considering getting one installed on either my DL650 or my Nomad. Some die hard sidecar buffs say that any bike with a telescoping front fork is not suitable for a sidecar but this seems a bit of an extreme view.

I haven't personally seen a Vulcan side car'ed anywhere. Seen alot of others. Rode one, my dad worked on way back in the day. It felt kinda weird to me because I wasn't used to it.
My Dad had a Harley 45 trike, had the big huge rear tires on it, and had like a 18 or 20" over springer on it. It was our shop bike for alot of years, we rode it when we went to pick up parts....it was fun, a blast to ride. The sidecar always seemed to feel like 1 side of the bike was always pulling. Never seen one that I really liked, shape wise.... I kinda looked at one at one time for my dog to ride in....

i used a California car on my Yamaha Venture when my daughter showed up
it served the purpose but i did not like it .. it took some time to get it set up the best it could be but it was a different world ... no longer a bike and not a trike and takes time to learn how to ride safely if u ever do .. u have 3 axles now and the weight and leverage of it does strange things ... i kept mine 11 years and traveled between Arizona and Quebeck ... i made numerous adjustments but had to settle for the best overall handleing but speed and load have definite effect on it .. the California car had a torsion bar suspension and easy off n on mounts ... the instructions i got were generic with basic info and the rest is up to u to make it work ... i would reccomend anyone do your homework before buying one and i think a trike would be a better way to go |

At Daytona this year I spoke with the folks at Hannigan about hacking a Nomad. They stated that out Vulcans are very easy to hack. The brackets are simple for anyone with a little mechanical knowledge to install themselves. With their setup you can have a brake on the sidecar with a quick disconnect line from the rear brake on the bike. After I get another bike I am seriously considering having them hack my nomad. To help with the steering I plan on having the front end raked out by them at time of install.

Thanks for the comments. Following my post I actually bought a sidecar rig on ebay. The bike is a high mileage BMW but one that has been gone through and the side car is a DMC M72. DMC is about 40 miles from here.
The guy paid about $10.5K for the side car alone this summer and is now in need of cash. He is a missionary who will be in Nicaragua until about Dec 15. I sent an email to DMC about putting the sidecar on my Nomad but haven't heard back from them yet. It seems it would be easy because of the frame ans one of you mentioned. It is just getting very difficult to keep this bike on an even keel in slow turns with my old knees getting worse every year. I'll post some pics if I pull this off. Oops, I forgot the link to the ebay listing. http://www.ebay.com/itm/262725719715...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

That ebay deal has fallen apart. The owner is out of the country and the guy who has it won't respond to my calls or emails.
I heading over to DMC on Friday to chat with them. The manager says they can put a side car on any motorcycle. They've got quite a few different types.

Oh and my deal is back on. It has bee like pulling teeth. It is such a good deal though that I want to make it work. The owner is back so I'll be driving down to San Diego with a friend the first week in Jan and haul it back home on a UHaul car hauler. Oh and I visited the DMC manufacturing facility. They can put one on a Nomad but I'm going to leave it on the BMW that comes with it.
