Has Anyone Drilled the Backplates

on the OEM Nomad pipes? What's the sound like? good/bad

Is this a muffler mod to the Nomad? I used to do a muff mod to the Honda Magna, but have not heard of such for the Nomad.

I did that to my honda shadow and thought it sounded like crap. Instead of the boom boom boom I was after I got an airy sounding piff piff piff. I wouldn't even try it on the nomad! After putting Vance and Hines on my shadow and cruising at 80 the noise was enough to drive me crazy. The stock pipes on the nomad is a refreshing change and music to my ears!

I guess it would be a muffler mod. At the very back of the pipe, the round plate you see around the exhaust hole is where I'm talking about drilling holes. I was just curious.

I put the V&H on my C50 and it was cool around town but on a longer ride forget it. Needless to say they came off shortly and took a UPS ride to Ca. I like the peace and quiet of my ride.

I know people are drilling 3 holes in the baffles on the VN900's....... supposed to make it a little throatier...... don't know on Nomads..... if you plan on getting pipes... might be worth a shot!

Dont try the drill out, ruins them. Buy new pipes if you want louder.

I know what you mean wolfman. After drilling out the pipes on my Honda Magna, the slight rumble of stock pipes on the Nomad appeals to me more right now.

There are two plates in the stock pipes. I bored them out and it makes a very nice difference. Still quiet but a wee bit throatier. No dyno test done but it seems to run a bit stronger. Took a plug read and all is good.

I have an 04 Nomad. When I had stock pipes on it, I Drilled holes in the back plate, but could not tell any difference in the sound. I read in Gadget's Fixit Page about how to completely remove the Back plate and remove the baffles. Upon doing this made the exhaust note louder (throaty to mellow). It was a nice sound, but still I wanted a little louder.

I'm satisfied with the stock sound until I ride in a poker run with all of the other bikes... then I seem to think about pipes. The wife wants the V&H Baggers next spring, so I guess I will have to get the m.... got to keep the little woman happy ya know! ;)

I stuck a crow bar inside my stock mufflers and punched through two sets of baffles driving the bar with a 5lb sledge hammer. Nice sounding and a fraction more power. Gutting the goat's belly next.
