Cheap spare Key
Just thought I would pass this along. First off I don't know what a spare key is worth at the dealer or a locksmith, so maybe this is not worth the trouble. I wanted a spare key to keep tucked in my wallet and decided to ask the local hardware if they had a match. Turns out they did have something close. The blank is ILCO X121 DC3 made in USA. The cut matched up with the original, but when I got it home, I found the shank is slightly thicker and at first would not go in any of the locks except the gas cap. I filed both of the flat sides with a points file ( mostly just taking the plating off ) and it works perfectly. Total cost $1.15 and 5 minutes of my time.

Thanks for the tip. I still have a second key from the dealer. Hope I never lose one and have to worry about getting another one made.

Cheap spare Key
Great info CNC, I will have to go look for one as another spare. Do you know the hardware store? (Mom and pop or chain?)
I was thinking of making a THEME key for my bike, but didn't want to spend $$ for one and then ruin it if things don't work out. With this method, I could try it and not be out much moula, just some of my time!!! Thanks for the info, appreciate it, good find. Scott

Cheap spare Key
Thats a great tip Norm, I ordered my spare on Ebay and it was about $8.00. Ive never carried a spare key on me but it would be a good idea to do so. I think I'll get myself one as well.

It's a Mom - Pop type hardware store, but the blank should be easy to find at most any place that cuts keys. The shank is longer than the original key, but for me that did not matter. I still have my spare from the dealer with the rubber covering in a safe place at home and this is just a flat key that slips nicely in one of the plastic ID windows my wallet.

I ordered one from my dealer and it cost $12.00 uncut. Then I had to go have it cut!

I had one made at Ace Hardware and it was the same way. With only a little bit of filing it worked great. It cost something like $2 bucks or less.

I had a hard time finding a blank here, nobody had one, the best I found was a lockshop willing to order the correct blanks in,(ten at a time) but I would have had to buy all ten pieces. Thats why I went to Ebay.

Not too many of the old hardware stores left the one we do have is owned by a transplant and not real helpful when doing things like try to find something that it does not really call for if you know what I mean

Most of those are gone or they hire the kids who just know that this works for it's intended purpose (like bottom of a garage door is just for that) when I wanted it for the bottom of the spoiler on my car...etc. No imagination or real problem solving, unless it has a computer monitor attached to it...SAD!!! going the way of the doodoo bird!!! Both local locksmiths in my area have an exact match for $2.50ish.
