Aftermarket Pipes for 2006 Nomad 1600
I am considering a splurge to get rid of that ugly stock goat belly and the heat it radiates. I am not looking for car alarm triggering loud, but a sound that will lend well to long weekend rides without a headache.
Recommendations? Looks? Sound? Tips? Problems? Issues? Performance? Thanks for your feedback. ~CigarNomad

Cobra True Duals are what you are looking for. Nice sound for exactly what you are talking about. I just put some on my '05 last summer and it's one of the best things I've done! I found mine on Ebay for about $350 shipped. They were from a used bike that only had 1500 miles on it.

You need to ask TC about aftermarket pipes!

I love the sound of the V&H baggers, but they're known for some heat/cracking issues on the rear head pipe. It's an easy fix to weld (unless your hundreds of miles away, which is a slightly harder cover-up until you can fix), but a known issue. There have been some phenomenal promotional prices, though. I think they've been retailed for around $250 recently, brand new pipes, although I can't for the life of me recall where. There was a link in one of the threads here...
Wonder if that means V&H was clearing out older stock and cmoing out with some better head pipes?

Rob,
I have the Vance and Hines Dual Baggers on my 1500. I love the way they sound, deep and throaty! If I lug the engine a bit through the neighborhood, they are pretty quiet. At normal hwy speeds they are loud but not excessively loud. At above normal hwy speeds, say 80 mph and above, I have a hard time hearing the stereo! Let me know next time you come to Vegas. We'll go to Casa Fuente and have an overpriced cigar or we can go to Don Vicente's and have a great reasonably priced one! Long ashes, Bro!

First let me say I would never buy a product from a company who knows they have a quality problem and refuse to address it. Yes I'm talking about V&H. They will not fix, warranty or acknowledge the head pipe cracking problem.
I just do not understand the need for louder pipes. All they do is piss off the general public. On our last 300 mile ride around the Finger lakes we passed through 3 towns that had signs at the town limit that read Noise Limit 90 decibels. I wonder who that was targeted at I know you are not lookin for ear shattering loud CigarNomad, but I hear pipes all the time that make more noise than 18 wheelers engine breaking. In the last two weeks I have had little kids plug their ears when I got on my bike to start it. So if children are thinking all bikes are loud then you know the adults are thinking the same. If we don't regulate ourselves the Town and State governments will do it for us. Personally I don't care if they do as I run stock pipes

Cigarnomad, I woild go with the cobras RacnRay done a study on his dyno machine and the cobra were more restrictive than the V&H there for cobra are not asloud. And you don't have to deal with head pipe cracks. I have also heard about cutting the goat belly out and adding pipe to make true duels out of the stock pipes and keeping the stock mufflers. Which makes then a little louder but not much this is what Iv heard sounds possible to me but others may know more than I do just my .02 worth good luckwith your choice.

From the post I have read, cutting the goat bladder is not the way to go. Some have removed the baffles from the stock pipes for a little more sound. If you want real sound, aftermarket pipes are the way to go. I have Cobras, they are quiet until you get on it hard. I cruise through the towns and I don't offend anyone.

These are about your only choices save doing the debaffle but then you still have the goats belly. The Cobras do come in two flavors though. The slash cuts are cheaper and shriller. The True Duals are deeper and have removable baffles . I have the True Duals and they have a nice purr. But the V & H are louder but there is the cracked pipe issue. But as many on here have said it is an ez fix.

Stock pipes are too quiet to be safe in heavy traffic. Period.

I like the V&H despite the odd pipe cracking on them, it took five years for mone to crack and never again since the repair. They are a very adjustable pipe depending on how load or quiet you like them.

I guess one excuse to run loud pipes is as good as another
