Common sence back firing solved 1700 vulcans
I forget there was a thread on solving the back fire problem on 1700 vulcans with tri oval mufflers. Right from the set go with I put on my tri ovals and after riding a block I had what everyone said back firing in my tri ovals. Common sence tells you what causes this problem it is gas vapor sitting in the pipe not burned and when air gets at it well of coarse it back fires. I right away set up my RPM by +50 and right away the problem was solved. Nothing else wrong just unburned gas vapor when shutting down throttle and air is restricted so when it does get some fresh air bang goes the pipes. Does not do it now and probably never will again. So easy to ad +50 RPM just play with your S switch till it comes up idle and add +50. Works for me and you do not even notice the +50 RPM really when at an idle.
So all of you that have a barking mufflers add the RPM and your problem will be solved. Login or Register to Remove Ads |

I'll find out tomorrow. I just got my Tri-Ovals in today, tomorrow is mounting day! I've been saving up for months and months to pick these up. The best solution is the PCV but it will take me several months to get that as well. In the meantime, the faster idle will be the temp solution for the afterfiring.

I posted a thread on this, something I learned from another member of this forum, defiantly works, also try switching to 87 octane, helps even more. I have eliminated 95% of backfiring with these 2 simple steps.

No I have the PCV Cobra it did not help much but smoothed out the bike I felt and gave it more power. That was not a solution at all to the back fires. But I still glad I have the cobra makes the bike run smoother and I believe cooler also

Someone ought to try a set of torque cones. The cones speed up the gasses coming out of the pipes. Might just do the trick. Will also restore a little back pressure.

I do not remember which one is the "s" switch but your manual tells you how to adjust your idle and the "s" switch location.

I did the +50 on the idle, no real changes. I've also marbled the reed valve. I wonder if I'm dealing with an exhaust leak...

I went out for a test drive after installing the Tri-ovals, LOVE the sound! I didn't notice any afterfiring that would be a cause for concern yet. Next commute to Nashville should tell me though.

The S switch is on the right side right above the cruise control, press it in and hold it when the bike is warmed up and in nutrel, once the screen goes blank, push the button until it reads idle, then you can plus or minus the idle by pushing the button to the left or the right.
