Freeway speed cameras

Tonight at midnight, 76 fixed-position speed cameras on the freeways in AZ will go dark. The governor decided not to renew the contract with the company that operates the cameras and processes the citations.

The speed and red-light cameras on surface streets will still be in operation. They were not affected by this decision.

Thats good, they tried that here a few years ago, and it was cancelled because of public outrage. Every once in a while theres talk of bringing them back.

It's not that I speed that much, I stay with the flow of traffic, but it's human nature that people slow down for those cameras, even if they're only going the speed limit. When you have 3 cameras in a 4 mile stretch of freeway, it makes things...interesting. I'm glad they're shut down.

Freeway speed cameras

They do have problems, I got snapped a number of times when doing well below the speed limit. Never got a ticket, but how you going to prove you are not speeding if its calibrated wrong??

A few weeks ago on a ride, passed one of the vans, traffic was doing 45, speed limit was 55, and every vehicle got snapped. It was almost like at a disco with the strobe lights.

They've been doing trials with speeding cameras here in El Paso.

One of the problems with the program here in AZ, is that (my guess here) probably only 50%-60% of the tickets get paid. The US Mail isn't considered "proper service" so a lot of people get the tickets and throw them away. They won't send a constable to serve the tickets and chances are good the they just let it go. Since they can't prove the ticket was ever received, if you don't show up within 120 days, the ticket gets thrown out of court. Sometimes they will send a constable to properly serve you, but usually they don't.

It's a real Mickey Mouse system.

Didn't people disguise themselves as gorillas while they drove past the speed cameras which further complicated the serving process. I love it.

There was one guy that used both a monkey mask and a giraffe mask. If you can't identify the driver, the ticket is no good. The cops saw the guy putting the mask on and nailed him.

There was also some local dentist who owned a Lamborghini and video taped himself racing up the Loop 202 freeway at about 160 MPH. Dumba ss posted it on youtube and the cops tracked him down. There aren't that many Lambos registered even in a state of 7 million, so he wasn't hard to find. Anything over 86 MPH is a felony here, so they have more teeth to go after drivers who are really busting the speed limit.

And there was one lady who had received dozens of tickets, some days she got caught by every camera on the stretch of road. She threw them away and the law finally caught up with her.
