Trunk gave up

After over 2 years and 29,000 miles of use, my Mutazu trunk finally bit the dust. It is cracked nearly all the way across near my mounting bracket. I hadn't noticed it until Jim (Taranis) commented on how it moved when he touched the backrest. I'm thankful for Jim noticing this. It had to have cracked recently because the wife would have noticed it being flimsy leaning against the backrest. Oh well, gotta start looking for another one now.

Guess there is no way of repairing it. I hate to hear that it cracked. It gave you some good service though Mitch.

Two years out of a $100 trunk, not bad. Time to get a good trunk, Mitch.

Trunk gave up

Hmmm, let's see what happened here:
1) Wife did not notice anything..
2) Jim touched it and it moved..
3) I'd say it is time to ask Jim a few more questions such as how hard he "touched it" -
4) Just saying... :)

I sent Jim a PM thanking him for being so observant. I hadn't noticed it and neither had the wife. I have it mounted all the way back on the rack giving her plenty of room to lean back and get comfortable. Doing so put stress on the bottom of the trunk at the end of the rack. I ordered another Mutazu for $138 identical color as what I have. I can't see investing $700 or more for a Scootworks or even much more for a Premeaux, hope I spelled it right. We don't keep much in the trunk having the pull behind trailer. I'm going to cut a piece of 3/16" alluminum the same dimensions as the bottom of the trunk to fit between the trunk and rack before mounting the new one. If it lasts 2 or 3 years as the first one did I'll be happy. My next bike will be a Voyager or something else in the same class so it will come with an OEM trunk anyway. It alarmed me when I saw the crack with the first thought coming to mind that it could have broken off allowing the better half to tumble off the back of the bike. I gave it a few good tugs straight back and it isn't going anywhere with the piece of alluminum plate covering the bottom inside of the trunk. The new trunk bottom will be sandwiched between two sheets of alluminum rendering it much sturdier.

What color trunk was it?I was thinking of getting one of these trunks and was wondering how close the silver color is to the nomad silver.

Mitch does this mean I only have a year of life left on mine? Mine is mounted a little different as it came with a mounting plate the size of the bottom and then I have a steel plate inside also. I agree with you on the price is well worth it for the use I get out of it.

Mike, it is the Pewter Pearl. Very close in color to the Nomad Pewter. Just now as much in the way of metallic as the Kaw Pewter. I've never had anyone tell me that the paint doesn't match though.

I doubt it Steve. Our trunk got a ton of use. Everytime we stop, my wife is opening it up for a hairbrush or something else. Our latch broke a few months ago and Mutazu sent me another for $17. It's a cheap trunk but has served us well. Yours may last much longer as some on here have.

If you add another peice in the bottom as you mentioned, it should help make it a lot more solid. Leaning on it probably caused the stress crack to slowly grow over time.

I'm just glad to hear you checked it out more thoroughly after I made mention of it. Anyone's worst nightmare is to have their passenger unintentionally disembark while going down the road. I'm sure the reinforcements you have planned will make the new one a lot more durable. SteveO, sounds like you got it down pat, but there's never any harm with giving it a good inspection once in awhile.
