Oil Gear
Unsure if I posted a pic of the oil gear or not after my failed attempt at going to the redwoods rally.
As you can see the bike already had the upgraded metal gear in it. After talking to the guy who makes the steel gear the install was done wrong. Bike is at shop here in Tampa getting fixed. That gunk you see is metal pieces and shavings from the stripped gear. I had two options at this point. Buy a used motor which if you look at eBay is running $1200-$2200 or rebuild existing motor. I had them tear down the bike replace gear, piston rings etc. $1400 all in. :-( Login or Register to Remove Ads |

The gear itself I don't know. I bought bike used with 28k on the clock. When it broke down it had 32k.

That price sounds like a bargain to have the motor re & re'd plus having new pistons and rings installed. Although 32k is low mileage for these motors.

I put two jogs in mine. The first one faile after 3000 miles because i filed the keeper to much. The second after I sold it about 4000 miles Don't know? Jim who has the bike now used the fog (ferris idea) method. He bought a stock oil gear from the factory.Ferris drilled out the center to specs on shaft and then after it was in place just tacked it on with a welder,so far so good for him.It also was a lot cheaper! There is also a way to pull the clip off and gear without splitting the cases. The Judge told me and it has been done when the shaft has been pulled out or loose because the gear was to close to the boss. The jog works 99% of the time if installed correctly but we think the gear failed this last time.I will be glad to provide more information if you need any help.It is a 3 hour job with the jog and a little longer with the other method because of the machining involed of drilling the shaft out. That the way jims jog looked. It also had about 4000 miles .We decided the gear itself .Bob (judge) changed machinist and me and ferris think mabe the gear although heat treated had a fault. The welded factory gear sounds lie a good idea to me

In my humble opinion, this thread is a good argument for avoiding a used '99 Nomad. You just don't know about those oil gears, unless the seller can document the POG replacement by a dealer.

buddy that's great with a TIG welder. I wouldn't trust my little cheapo flux welder for this one. Might just go this route. Thanks for the information Mike. If you've got any photos or other information on the FOG I'd really like to see it.
