Yes, that dipstick is HOT ! Ok, sounds like I did everything right, the manual seems to be inaccurate about the amount of oil to be replaced after draining for a good amount of time and removing the filter, 4.5 qrts. is wrong. I think 4.5 qrts. a good place to start. I have rode it about 800 miles since the change, no oil in the intake. 5.0qrts put me right at the halfway mark.

2010 Nomad. 5 quarts puts mine about 3/4 up the hash marks. I just check mine after a ride... park it and let it idle a little bit then let is sit a couple mins, then check it with the bike level. Checking it after letting it idle for a long time to warm up checks the same. 4.5 quarts and its alway on the low end of the hash marks. Yes, I always put on one glove... that stick is way to hot to hold!
I always put in the 4.5 qts then warm it up and check it... then always add the rest. Not sure why, it would be easy enough to suck some out with the wife turkey baster... unless she caught me!

+1 on following the owners manual. You should wait three minutes to check it after shutting it down. Just give it a bit to settle and check it as described. The amount Kawasaki states in the manual with a filter change (I think it's 4.3 quarts) puts mine dead center between the add and full mark. I've got about 4000 miles on my last oil change and it still hits that mark when I check it. Just finished a 3200 mile trip a week ago and it didn't lose a drop. That's with Amsoil and an Amsoil filter.
