Electrical questions for 07 Nomad 1600

Hi, new owner here. Though i'm very happy with my recent purchase, i got spoiled with my last bike that was mainly stock except for a few factory installed performance upgrades. I totally forgot the headache often involved with purchasing someone else's toy. Anywho, i noticed my neutral light doesn't work at all. What and where do i check to troubleshoot this? The bike cranks and idles fine even when on the kickstand and in neutral, yet the neutral indicator on the dash has yet to shine. The other lights on the dash do indeed work.

Less important (kinda) but equally as annoying, the bike has some unorganized wiring leading back to the saddlebags. The wiring is for 4 spotlights up front, 2 under the bags, some led's on the rear rails, some autozone looking strips (that don't work) on the bags themselves, and a 3 socket power inverter. All of these lights are controlled via 2 3-prong toggle switches mounted on the inner side of the saddlebags.

There's also a skull on the rear fender under the brake light, and skull lights on the rear of the saddlebags that are wired directly into the brake lights as they only come on when on the brake. I plan to replace the saddlebag mounted skull lights for something with LED's if possible, cause the skulls kinda scare my daughter LOL

To the point, aside from cleaning everything up, and removing the 4 spots from up front, i'd like to wire the rear LED's as running lights only. I'm really just afraid of forgetting to turn them off when parked if i ever remember to turn them on. I could make things simpler and run the toggle switches' power wires to some running light wires, that way the switch can always be toggled ON but will also turn off when the ignition is turned off. Or would it be better to eliminate the toggles and splice them in directly with some running light wires?

Which wires and what location are the correct running light wires to splice into for this?

Is there any problem placing this type of load on the ignition or existing running light wires?

Along with the rear LED's, i'd like to replace 2 of the spot lamps up front with larger (55w) lamps like on an aftermarket lightbar. Do i splice them into the headlamp power wires or what is the preferred method for this?

Sorry for the essay and so many questions, but i tend to be OCD and the wiring this bike is going to give me nightmares until I can tidy up things up and run them with the turn of the key. Not to mention the neutral light that I didn't notice until i got the bike home

I have led running lights on my1500 bags and I have them spliced in with my rear running lights. On my 1500 the connection for the tail lights is under the seat so that's where my connection is. For the spot light here is a link that might give you some advice : http://gadgetjq.com/wiredrivinglights.htm . Cant help you on the neutral light since the 1600 is different from 1500.

Nice looking ride by the way!!

Thanks for the link! The relay method seems easy enough, just gotta find a spot to hide a relay or fuse panel. Matter of fact, maybe that's the best route - fuse block with relay I'd still like it to be powered via a source that's only hot when the ignition is on. That fuse panel will be a neutral location for any other accessory this point forward (ie - radio, antenna, lightbar, etc). With all the accessory lighting already, it's not the prettiest looking under the seat, and there sure isn't ample room under there like on my previous scoot. So i imagine i can just replace the skull brakes with something else that's running AND brake lights, splice that into the rear brake wire. Which leaves me wondering which wire/harness is for the brake lights, and which wire/harness can i tap into to be hot only when ignition is on (??)

You can tap into your running lights which are hot only with ignition on. Test light will test you what wire goes where.

No. Do not power spotlights with the headlamp circuit.
Look under the seat, on the left side you will see a white connector.
The wires run thru the rear fender. That is the brake, tail, left turn, right turn and ground.
That's where I would make my connections.
It's been awhile since I've worked on mine but if I remember correctly blue is the brake light
and red is the taillight, green is left, gray is right and black is ground.
Check the circuits with an ice pick tester. The taillight circuit can "switch" your relay or simply power a few LED's.
I put the aux fuse panel behind the left side cover. Good luck

Awesome, i see the wires, thanks! I'm thinking, for now, i'll splice the power cables from the toggles into the tail light (red) wire. They've both got inline fuses, different size fuses for some reason, but fuses at least. That way the switches can stay on but only get power when the tail light is lit.

I've traced as much of the lamps on the highway bars as i could, looks like the PO spliced both lamps into 1 wire up front and ran it under the tank back to another splice that leads to the toggles. Those will come off this week. There's also quite a few LED's drilled under the lightbar, and in the wind deflectors as well. I lose that wire under the tank, but they're also controlled via toggles so i'm assuming they're wired the same as the spots. There's a big splice job done behind the right saddlebag, wrapped in loom, and zip tied. It'll honestly be kinda fun to work on when the weather warms up and i can drink a beer or two while doing it.

Thanks ya'll for the help, any other thoughts or input is welcome!

You do have powered accessory wires under the fuel tank that can be used. Maybe that's where the PO got some of his power for some of the lights. Those wires are always hot. You have the same under the seat too.Like Dave said don't use the headlight since you don't want to overload it and blow a fuse....then you will lose your headlights too .

In cleaning up the wiring you may want to put plug connectors in any lines leading to lights mounted on the bags. Much easier to take the bags off that way for routine bike maintenance.

Did some more digging at 2am, all the extra lights are ran back to the toggles, and toggles are connected with ring connectors on the positive battery terminal. Once I located the brake/tail/turn harness, I found the splices for the skull brake lights and examined them. Must've been a loose connection cause now they come on a running lights too. Along with the side saddlebag lights I didn't think worked, they came on as I jiggled wires as well.

I'm looking forward to riding today and leaving the wiring mess behind me for day :-)

I feel for ya. Wiring is one of the most popular messes POs leave behind. When I cleaned my 2004 Nomad up I installed a small fuse assembly under the right side cover. Everything folds in neatly and can be accesses very easy.

A little on the pricey side. Go to Delcity.net. you can build it all yourself for less than half the cost of that and have a possible 6 circuits

Finally got to tak her for s ride through town today. The neutral light actually started working at some point. It didn't for the first few miles, but then once I stopped at a light on the way back home, I saw it was on. Been working fine ever since. Odd.

As for the ride itself, man oh man, I was still grinning half hour after I got back home! These are some great bikes!

So where can I find an ignition wire that I can tap into to run an aux fuse panel? Mainly the running LED's, extra lights (2 lamps under the bags), and when I order my batwing I'll want to power the radio and 12v adapter as well. I don't want to blow anything if I tap all that into the red tail light wire under the seat. I'd rather grab a single line if possible to feed an aux fuse box and wire at least the extra lamps and fairing electronics to the aux fuse box for a neutral junction.

Making progress on the wires tho, traced a few down when attempting to remove the battery (gave up on that for now, that battery box is something serious!)

Unnecessary wiring and stuff...
