removing front wheel from 1999 nomad
I have just tried to take the front wheel off my nomad to replace tire. i removed the one pinch bold on the right hand side, removed the speedo cable, and removed the axle nut. when i try to remove axel it won't budge.
i can put a screw driver in the hole of the axle shaft and rotate it easily, but if i try to pull it back and forth, it almost seems like its hitting something, or locking up. i tried tapping lightly with a hammer on the axle with the nut on it. still nothing, did not even feel like it was moving. does anyone have any suggestions, Thanks don Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Try taking as much weight off of the wheel as you can. It may be binding up if you aren't

Is this the first time you've removed it?

Isn't that a left-hand threaded nut? I can't remember from the last time I pulled the front wheel on my Nomad, since it was nearly 5 years ago.

It's probably just dry, spray a little penetrating oil on it an keep tapping with a mallet, (not a steel hammer) it's will eventually come out. Just don't force it.

hi yes wheel is off the ground, calipers removed, nut is off, for clamp bolt removed, speedo cable unscrewed and pulled out.
the axle shaft will turn so its not binding, but it will not come out. almost like the shaft is catching on the speedometer adapter. |

Maybe the axle is stuck on the bearing inner race. Send some good spray lube in there from 4 places and see if that helps. Then maybe with a dowel made of hard wood and a hammer tap the axle in and out from both ends. This may break the bind free. Tap lightly .

i gave up, took it to shop and had them do it. He said all he did was tap on it and it came right out. not any problems at all. i had it up in the air. Could that have been the problem, does the front wheel need to be loaded with the bike weight ??

Nope you did it right, but it must have been stuck on the inner bearing races.

Fit new bearing's while you are there, put shitload's of grease on them and the shaft, and buy a bigger hammer for the next time.
