speaker locations
afternoon,
so I'm in the middle of putting together an audio system for my nomad. I'm going with a 6x9 fairing, my question comes down to the second set of speakers. I'm torn between 6.5"polk speakers in jtd lowers or 5.25" polk speakers mounted in a tour pack clone. if anyone can provide some first have experience with trunk mounted speakers vs speakers in the lower fairings that would be fantastic. thank you, Justin

I had a Gold Wing with the rear mounted speakers. They were great for the passenger but I couldn't hear them in the front.
If you ave 6x9's in there and feel the need to add another set of speakers I would start looking for a more powerful amp. No matter what you stick in there you will never get the sound quality that you get in a car.

I have the 6x9s in my fairing. I purchased a set of jtd lowers used and they came with 5 1/4 polks so I hooked them up. there was no improvement in sound or loudness. In fact it may have made it worse. I may remove them. I'll mess with them a little, but I'm not adding a amp, it was fine for me with just the 6x9s

good to know, the second set is 90% for the better half. I wouldn't mind a little more sound but mostly it's for her. I just wasn't sure if bigger speakers in the lowers would be better vs smaller ones in the trunk firing into the wind. If I could just find a decent priced trunk with 6.5 cutouts that would be perfect. all I've come across has been 4", 5.25" or with a big price jump 6x9s. I'm not looking for a killer show quality bike audio system. I've used handlebar mounted speakers for years I'm just looking to build my nomad...more polished. Thanks for the input.

My Harley has 4 speakers (2 in fairing, 2 on tourpak). When riding solo, there is a noticeable difference if the rear speakers are not on. The sound is not as full.

You can get speaker pods that mount to the trunk/tourpak.

The OEM speakers mounted on the trunk on my Voyager were pretty much useless.
With a full face helmet I could not tell they were there. |

If you put a trunk on with speakers you are forcing your riding partner to listen to the music even if they don't want to unless you have a passenger volume control.

She will have her own remote, and we agreed on a split playlist years ago. Roll of the dice whether i pull up to a stoplight blasting metallica or maroon 5 :p
And she could hear the music with just 4 handlebar mounted speakers i'm sure she could hear it with just the 6x9s, i figured i have 4 channels might as well use em and make it a little clearer at 55-60mph

Speaker location
I had speakers in the lowers before I got a bat wing, and they were pretty much useless. Don't waste your money, I do t know about the rear facing ones. But I had them in the fairing and hey work great. I have the polk audios.

I have a Harley ultra Classic trunk on my bike. I have 2 Polk 6 1/2" speakers in my fairing, and 2 Polk 6 1/2" speakers in the speaker pods on the trunk. Like Scott said, "there is a noticeable difference if the rear speakers are not on" even when my wife is on with me. I do have a Kenwood 400 watt marine amp also, and sound is awesome. Like was stated, it ain't going to sound like in your car (when your going down the road @ 60+ mph, but putting around town, it's close)
