Job done
Bike is officially fixed, took it to work this morning. No gear whine, no unexpected sounds at all. Very happy with how it turned out and for having the opportunity to rip it apart a bit and do some hands on. Thanks to all who helped with suggestions and advice. Now, anyone want to buy a $80 "driveshaft holder" tool for $40? Only used once...

Congrats on catching that problem in time and getting it fixed. Been known to destroy an engine if not caught before the bearing totally disintegrates.
Where about in New Hampster are you?
