Nomad "Dark Side" car tire

Well, I ordered and just got a car tire to put on. I ordered an Achilles ATR Sport 195/55 R16. This thing looks huge. Hope it fits. I've still got pretty good tread on my Metzeler, but I may go ahead and put on the car tire anyway. American Iron Horse in Huntsville said they would install it for me. I got the tire from tires-easy.com for $51 plus shipping.

I was hoping to get you to come over and hang off the rear of the bike to film it in action.

Nomad "Dark Side" car tire

Got the tire (Achilles 195/55/R16) installed this morning and rode it to work. Before installation the owner of Huntsville American Iron Horse, his mechanic and I looked at the tire and all thought no way is this thing going to fit in there. However, it did fit with about 3/16" clearance on the drive shaft side; more on the other side. I had them fill it to 26 psi. The mechanic test rode it and was impressed with the handling and quality of ride. He said it was smooth as glass at indicated 100 mph. I got on and rode it around town some and then down I-45 to work in Conroe (about 30 miles).

It feels a little soft in back to me, but handles great; no big difference from my Metzeler 180/60. I had no problem getting used to the feel of the tire when cornering. I would say it is a subtle difference not a significant difference. Going down the highway it is rock solid. I put the throttle lock on and rode it down the interstate at 75 mph (actual GPS) with no hands for about a quarter of a mile. No wobble, no pull to either side, no problem. Changing lanes and making manuvers around obstacles seemed about the same, but I did feel a slight wobble when changing lanes a couple of times, maybe from a ridge in the pavement. A MC tire may have done the same.

The speedometer error is exactly the same as with the Metzeler 180/60. When the speedometer is indicating 90, I am going 80 on my GPS. According to the tire calculator, the sidewall height is practically identical, so this makes sense. I'll probably do some experimenting with the tire pressure. I think the rear feels a little soft so may try about 28 psi and see how this feels.

I'll let you know if anything develops and will try to get some pictures to post of the tire on the bike.

Pablo

I'll be careful; no dragging the floorboards around the corners just yet.
Thanks,
