Yeah, John is a very "unique" individual. His bike is indeed a mess but it is very cool to see in person. He wears a riding suit that looks like a flight suit from NASA and IIRC it actually says NASA on it. I was at the IBA Jacksonville event a couple years back when they gave him his certificate for the UCC. Mike Kneebone had one with the time on it and tore it up in front of John, then gave him one that said he completed it in the requisite time frame. The whole place was rolling. John just smirked. He has done some in city SS1000's in New York, DC, Chicago and probably a few others I am unaware of.
